Hi, for sale is a damascus bowie. Blade is 10.5" overall length is 16". Blade is my tri-colored damascus in 300 layer random pattern. Fittings are the same, heat blued to a dark grey. Pin is copper. Handle is a very nice piece of ironwood burl, polished to a high gloss and showing excellent chatoyancy that ironwood is known for.
I'm asking $600 obo. And I'll include priority shipping.

Hey Justin, do you mortise all of your handles or is this a one piece? (I noticed on that camp knife that it was mortised)

I mortise my handles.
I don't know if that's a good thing from your point of view, but I prefer it for a number of reasons.
Mainly it provides a much better fit. There is almost no wiggle room before gluing up. In my mind this makes for a stronger joint. It could be argued that a single piece of wood is stronger but I don't believe that. If you properly glue two pieces of wood and then break the joint, it is almost never the glue itself that fails, but rather the wood splitting along its grain. I've not only read this, but also seen it in my own tests.
It also allows me to use a larger tang. By knowing exactly where the cavity is, I can bring it almost to the end of the handle. With broached handles it seems like tangs end up being kind of spindly..
I'll go on to add, that I've had single piece handles break, likely from voids along the tang, but I've never had a mortised handle break.
Thanks for asking, if I can answer any other questions please don't hesitate to ask. Justin Carnecchia

J Justin Carnecchia , thanks for the detailed response and explanation. I usually see mortised handles when there’s stag and rams horn used, not so much with wood, that’s why I was curious. That’s a great looking bowie and the pattern in that long clip blade really stands out nicely. Well done!

Sorry, I never saw your last post. I thought it was supposed to notify my of responses to my threads...
Anyhow, thank you, this knife has sold.
If interested I can always make another very simlar knife. I have the pattern for the blade and handle, patrern weld would obviously be slightly different as would the wood, but of course on the plus side you would have input on the knife.
If interested, just pm me. Thanks, Justin Carnecchia
