I got the R-5 from this deal of the day, and was wondering of those who have this model, if the brass liners as seen in the picture is a standard feature of this model.
LOL! NO, not at all. I'm laughing because no matter when I pull the trigger I always see that I should wait for the next one! Well, not really, but it sure feels that way sometimes.
I got the first R5 for $65 and it is a beautiful chandan model. I wouldn't change a thing on it; it is perfectly done, with very nice even spine on the tang, but no liners.
There were a couple more, and then the first horn came along and I snagged it; it was only $45. The spine / top of the tang was a bit of a mess. The tang is not the same width down the back of the handle, so there were gaps between the handle slabs and the tang that kumar filled with laha. (In the middle of yours is a similar area, but much smaller.) This one looks positively polished in comparison, and the brass liners add even more to it. I suspect the liners might be there to help avoid the problem I had, as they will help mate up the handle slabs if the tang is a bit uneven.
I spent about an hour working on it, and got the spine sanded out on the belt sander, and then polished up the horn. It looks a lot better, but the uneven spine width doesn't look that attractive. I'll probably add it to the project pile, and grind out the laha and fill with epoxy for a flat / even back. Nothing I can do about the metal though. Otherwise the blade is very good.
Nice pics, and a neat touch to this model.
