date a sword

I am trying to find out how old and what kind of sword has been passed down to me from my grandad. I enjoy collecting all kinds of swords, daggers, and knives, but do not know how to date this one, or even where to start. Any help out there?

Posting photos would be a great start. An overall photo, close ups of the hilt and any markings on the blade. Also a ruler/yard stick to provide scale
