Is this knife from 1974-1980?

Did BUCK do these handle "grooves"? or is this a homemade job? They are well done and balanced, one side to the other.

4 pins (3 brass, one ss)

Thanks

110 112 data sheet.

From what I can see in your blurry photobucket pictures. That looks to be a version 5 variation 6, 1974 to 1980. I doubt that fuller style groove in the handle is factory. I have never heard of Buck doing a groove like that.

I suggest you find a different photo hosting site than photobucket. Unless you are willing to pay their ransome fee your photos will always be degraded like that. Most on this site seem to use imgur. I use google photos, because I already had an account there. But Google photos is more complicated to set up where the pictures will show.

Thanks for you comment. I'm trying out Imgur right now, but can't figure out how to embed an image from Imgur.

Those photobucket photos were crisp, clear photos, but not after photobucket did its magic on them.

On Imgur I can link, which nobody will click on, but I can't seem to embed the photos.

I use other forums where I can upload pic files directly from my computer, which is SO much easier.

Are you using a PC or a phone? On my PC I right click the photo. Then select copy image location, from the drop down list. I then paste that into the image block. I have no idea how to post an image from a phone. I don't even try. This thread may be of help to you.

I'm using a PC. I finally got an image from Imgur to show up in my Bladeforums preview. But then it says "Just one more step," a security captcha. After that it reverts to about 100 lines of code, no pic.

Someone wrote that Imgur "generates a BBCODE" which can then be used to embed images from there to forums, but my Imgur pages have no mention of a BBCODE, and the other options don't work. I've tried all of them.

I'm now experimenting with postimage, but no luck there, either.

One finally appeared from Imgur, but I can't repeat it.
Can't get past this:

I can't handle this. I'm outta here, I think.

How the heck did you do that?
I went to your first post, near the bottom where it says . (img) I right clicked one of them and selected view image.

You should be able to skip that step. Just go to you album on imgur, and select you photo so that it is full size on your screen. Not a thumbnail. Then right click on the photo and select, "copy image location".

Then come back here and click the little box with the mountain in it. It will say Image when you hold your mouse pointer over it.

I've not seen a Buck factory knife with grooves like that. Yes, that's a 2 dot as Biker says. DM

I don't see any reason for those grooves in the first place.

They weaken the integrity of the slabs and I can't see how they would improve your grip.

Maybe just a whim of a guy who like to carve on wood.

I think you're right about that. Except that they are shallow enough on those thick slabs to not be a concern; they're simply not needed.

Thank you Old Biker for all the info. It works.

Strange, that clicking "Copy link address" on Imgur's thumbnail does not work, but opening up the photo and right clicking "Copy image address" does work, as you say. (Maybe it appears as "Copy image location" on some computers)

Now that makes Imgur workable for me. I have used image hosting sites almost exclusively for forums, not for storing my photos in general.

(Also strange that today a BBCODE option does appear for me on Imgur. Wasn't there yesterday.)

Blade steel is 440C. DM

I usually prefer carbon steels, but I always liked this 440C steel. I think they used (still use?) it for Swiss Army knives.

From Wikipedia: 440C is a 400 series stainless steel, and is the highest carbon content from 400 stainless steel series. It is usually heat treated to reach hardness of 58–60 HRC. It is a bearing steel, and used in rolling contact stainless bearings, e.g. ball and roller bearings. It is also used to make knife blades.

think victorinox uses a X55CrMo14 or 1.4110 steel for their blades on swiss army knives. Composition is:
15% chromium
0.60% silicon
0.52% carbon
0.50% molybdenum
0.45% manganese

found this on a quick search. closer to a 440a sort of. heat treat is 56hrc range I found so a bit softer than some makers would heat treat it. 1.4110 I saw has a range of 56 to up to 58.5 hrc roughly. not bad though for what its use is.

steel isnt as important as heat treat as you probably already know. 440c has a much higher carbon amount same with 440b, 440a even has more carbon but is about 97% similar to 1.4110. hope that helpful......

Bill Keys placed the 2 dot 110's began at 1975. This one looks like it has the large pins which puts it at 1978. Just from my notes. DM

Thanks David. For some reason, I'm having difficulty determining if those are large or small pins. If large, you're correct 1978 to 1980.
