Dating the phenolic handled sheath knives.

David, pictures of the 1966 Buck 105 box label and rear side of the sheath (you see what I mean by rivet off-centered as compared to the stitching). OH

Yes, I see. My loop is exactly like yours as well as it's position. The rivet is on the other side and mine is black and the top rounded. Not silver and flat. Plus, your belt loop extends 3/4" lower than mine. Good photo. Thanks, DM

The Mailman gave this to me as a gift, with some other stuff that got trashed. I need some opinions on it as far as the date and the lanyard hole...

Yes, it was nicely done. The spacer material changed to micarta in late 1969. Which that 105 looks to have. DM

From the photos I can't tell if the spacers are hard fiber or micarta. If they are hard fiber then I would say early 1969. If they are micarta then I think the knife is from late 1969 into 1972. The sheath looks like the model that came with the micarta knives. It really comes down to fiber or micarta spacers.

So to tell the difference? Fiber would have a grain to it and micarta would be a universal color/texture?

Just the opposite. Fiber will show either no structure or a layered structure.
Micarta on edge shows what I call a waffle pattern created by the weave of the fabric.

The spacers are clearly fiber IMO.
