No Matter what the joys, no matter what the sorrow, we can never return to the past, and look at us.. our lives has passed us by, but there is no use dwelling and looking behind…

Lately I’ve been feeling rather lethargic about knife collecting and forum browsing in general, but it is days like TODAY that give me a new rejuvenating life… it comes from receiving a new work of art and meeting new friends.

[ TODAY ], I felt like I was 17 again in more ways than one ;). I received two packages today. One from was from my buddy Q, it contained a Marlboro – Zippo lighter that I had LUSTED for since I was a sophomore in college – but for the DEATH of me I couldn’t smoke enough :p to collect all the “Marlboro miles” points to get the lighter (or bum enough from friends, besides all those guys smoked Camels :p). Though I appreciate my health very much it had always been a regret of mine, which carried on. I couldn’t help but smile all day when I got this lighter. Not only that, it came with a reversible Marlboro jacket which I wanted badly too! THANK YOU, Q. You are truly a gift of fate!! I appreciate it buddy. (Lifter is making me a cowboy leather sheath for her ^_^)

Not to take away from the review, the other box came from DAVID BROADWELL. The secretary sarcastically said (with eyes rolling) “What, more ‘camping tools’??” I think I didn’t really pay any attention to her.. I gave her a blank HUH.. dude?? smiley stare :p

I remember in college I did not DARE drop over half a grand on just one knife because of very unstable times. I dearly wanted a Les Robertson MLR2 SUBHILT from no other than Mr. David. However, by the time I had graduated and was more daring, the series had sold out, and there was none to be found. I had impersonally emailed Mr. David asking if he would make me one under the table, and he let me down slowly saying he couldn’t do that (plus he was not into tacticals so much lately) (despite my begging and no lie flattery), however we only live once and during last years Spirit of Steel show in Texas I sucked my gut in and approached him to ask again, a FEW odd years later. Quite fearful of rejection again I still did it.

I guess if you are honest and sincere of heart things work out – and the wonders of asking politely. Who I met is a friendly and down to earth gentleman that I feel honoured to have gotten to know. He was a kindred spirit, and friend first before a salesman and that I appreciated. He said no problem – he would make me a sub hilt of an original recipe!! You can’t imagine my excitement, he treated me respectfully despite my grungy clothes.. cargo pants and black shirt, which I have been looked down upon in the past I remember, especially when I was younger.

What was born was a true custom! The blade sports a “working grade” which in my mind is a damn good hand rubbed looking finish).

9” S30V blade from guard to tip, 14” OAL
Double business edge
Stainless fittings
Green and black Canvas Micarta (which was the selling point - no more black dammit he says ^_^) slabs.

The blade is 1/4” thick – totally dehorned and the spine rounded for added comfort in extended sabre or Filipino grip.

Mr. David faxed me a sketch with a blade a bit reminiscent of my childhood MLR but I drew two curves on his blade. FAT, WIDE, MEAN and BIG – MAKE ME A BADASS ;) (nervous he might take it as criticism) was what I said... he welcomed the comment enthusiastically which I was relieved of. Now, he said, it is truly a collaboration!!

Despite it’s thickness, this blade is DAMN FCKIN light. The balance point is just in front of the guard, which keeps the blade down and ready to strike. I have to further study the way this one floats in the hand as it is distinctly different from the feather light instantly everywhere Hossom; powerful top heavy Mad Dogs; hammer feeling Black Clouds, or the dual end heavy Pattons which allow both quick redirection and recovery.

The added weight of the sub hilts and furniture give weight in your index fingers so you know the knife is there. The weight is distributed evenly everywhere and there is no particular part of the knife that wants to go down unlike the other makers (which is not a bad thing mind you). It is balanced like a jack of all trades, not all committed in a strike, not very light, but enough weight in the handle for a good recovery. An all in one. Not too offensive not too defensive.. truly an all around.

Many “bad boy fighters” criticize the sub hilt vehemently because of the idea that the sub hilt is worse than an index cutout that is not forgiving when you FCK up in the presentation when your grip is not textbook perfect – also they do not like the inability of grip changes.. without debating over practicality of grip changes or whatnot in a “knife fight”, I have to say that because of the wide sub hilt and the meticulous SHAPING and DEHORNING of the handle it is a pleasure to change grips and is forgiving when you slide your hand onto it.

There is no ONE WAY to hold the knife, I feel… you can be a bit off but be okay cause of the curves of the back of the handle and the swells. It points very well and floats comfortably in your hand like a viper ready to strike.

The pictures hopefully speak for themselves as far as fit, finish, and grind work. It is splendid flowing… sexy... and, ever since the early 90s fighting magazine ads, it is DISTINCTLY Broadwell. When I opened the box I was at awe... it was as I had pictured it in my minds eye when I was 17.

A large part of me can’t help but feel [ selfish ] about this piece. To my knowledge it is so far, a “one of a kind” piece, but something this awesome I can’t help but share and be proud of!

This fighter will be a permanent part of my collection to mingle with the best of them.. my favourite fighters from the likes of my fighting bowie heroes and, more importantly friends – Jerry Hossom, Rob Patton, though not acquainted yet, respect to Black Cloud and Mad Dog.

Mike Snody and Neil Blackwood - the only reason you ain’t up there dudes is cause you still owe me a BIG BOY, darn it ;). Thanks Q – Thanks Mr. David for the memories, past and future. I told jerry Hossom once I got a job I would buy a sword with my first saved paychecks (and I did).., I told David Broadwell when I am the boss I will buy a REAL sub hilt ;)

Just by the title of your post I knew I was in for a treat. :D

I too, just love David's subhilts. While there are certainly other fine maker's doing them, no one IMO does them better. Whether tactical or art, they are flawless. I was lucky enough to own a matching pair of the MLR Fighter and sub-hilt and like a total idiot, sold the Fighter  Still have the sub-hilt and probably always will. It rocks.

I have talked to David before about doing a truly custom sub-hilt in the future and it looks like it might be time to start that project rolling.

That is definitely a fine blade and a worthy addition to any collection. Nice job all around.
