David Mirabile Hunter for The John Sharp Dangerous Game Award

I apologize if this is a "highjack" of the thread on David's knife.

Stomania, No need for an apology, I welcome the photos of your hunt with John.
Sounds like an epic hunting trip. I'm glad that you posted.

Your Father in law was a great maker... It's good to hear that my name was brought up and was part of the same conversation...

You are right, I'm very proud to have made a knife for a man that depends on his rifle and his knife more than most of us will ever know.
I'm glad that you had a safe and successful hunt. Awesome pictures.

John is a legend in these parts. I have had the pleasure of knowing him for many years.
Ask him to tell you the story about Wilbur Smith sometime. You won't believe it but he has the scars to prove it.:)

Joe, the dog, Jesse, a fox terrier I believe, is a good dog. When I hunted with John in 2013, she was a lot of puppy and by this trip had really grown up. Fortunately, we didn't do a whole lot of tracking. However, most of the tracking that is done is done by John's number one tracker, Isaac, and his new tracker, Lovemore. It is worth the price of admission to watch Isaac track. Until you've watched someone with that skill set work, you really can't believe it. I told my Dad that he could if he parked his pickup in the middle of the pasture and walked away from it, Isaac would be able to find him, no matter the head start.

Speaking of the price of admission, John's stories are worth it as well. His stories about Wilbur Smith and many others to go along with it.

I do agree

The most impressive tracking skills I've ever seen were done by trackers I meet and had the pleasure to hunt with in Africa

Truly incredible

Looks like you had a great trip

I would love to see that little fox terrier running around over there :)

Just getting in from the awards banquet at the SCI show. This past week has been one that I will never forget. The show itself was pretty amazing. But the friends that I've made here, top that. I'll try to get some pictures together, but truthfully, I didn't take too many. I'll try to take some tomorrow. My main reason to go to Vegas was to deliver the award knife to John Sharp. We've talked several times over the past few years since I made his knife, but was looking forward to meeting him. I met John in the lounge at the Luxor Tuesday evening. He was anxious to see what I made for him. When I showed him the knife, display stand and sheath... well, there are no words... to say that he was satisfied is an understatement. We sat and talked there for a couple hours.
John and I had dinner with Bob, retired NY cop that has hunted with John 3 times. Don't remember the dinner, but the time spent with these two was pretty memorable... the food, not so much.
I'll try to finish this tomorrow as right now I can hardly keep my eyes open. I'll also try to take some more pictures tomorrow.

looks like a hell of a knife.
I agree about not overly-embellishing this particular knife. It stands on its own merits as a piece of craft and a tool.

I don't do those sort of handle wraps, so I am not trying to steal a technique, however, what did you do to seal the wrap against the inevitable staining liquids that it will encounter?

I do handle wraps on daos, and I may need to protect the wrap on one of those some day.

I hope you do not mind the question. The knife looks great.

Here are some pics of the finished Award Knife and stand

Congrats David for being selected to make this awesome set
