Dawn of a new day Give A Way by Kris,. ***The winner is post #22 Cuts Like a Kris.***

I really hope this darkness isn't endemic to Kris' everywhere, I feel for you my friend as I understand seeing the light of day, but that is life- never boring at least!! I can't honestly say there is a place that sticks out. Mardi Gras, sure. Australia, more Mayan, with inca and Aztec put in, the speakers rock at the Althing in Iceland, where my family comes from in Norway, the Parthenon......

But my heart resides with my kids, and in the bush. Luckily I live near some of the nicest woods in the world. For the contest, Something like this, when they are old and have kids of their own, everybody relaxing together in the woods. Maybe after a day on the water in the Yukon like we used to plan for:

If it was today, it would just be to be transported back here again, a better time and place.

Thanks for the giveaway my friend. This place truly is a becon of light and goodwill when the rest of the world seems dark and foul. Glad things are on the mend!!

P.S. I was confused when I glanced at your thread title the first time, I didn't remember starting a giveaway!! Then I looked closer! Long day apparently.....;)

I certainly hope things are going better for you. A truth I take comfort in, though not everyone does, is that things always working out in some fashion, maybe not for the best, but everything ends. While this doesn't mean that things will end up to any of our advantage, it does mean that when you look back at some point in the future it will feel like things ended up the way they had to end up. I don't believe that there is any force in the universe guiding events, but I do know that the human mind gives existence meaning through narrative (it's why historians and archaeologists like me have jobs). So even if everything is (in some hypothetical objective reality) meaningless and random, our minds will still provide context, meaning, and narrative to our struggles.

So whether or not you believe in anything beyond yourself, meaning can come from darkness. Your mind can create it, because that is how we comprehend the universe.

For my entry, a very hard and trying period in my life resulted in me getting into the position of being able to pursue my childhood dreams. And I got to see a dream location as a working archaeologist. So it's kind of an achieved dream, but looking back, it certainly seems that I wouldn't have been able to get where I am if I hadn't waded through some shit.

And it is my photo from my working trip to Easter Island :D

OK OK I'm working on it.Do you think its easy having a brain the size of a planet?Easter Island
/Rapa Nui is somewhere I'd like to see.Maybe those parts of France and Belgium where so many ANZACS were killed-Pozieres, Fromelles, Bullecourt.I have a yen for the antarctic islands too.I would also like to go out in the central desert and catch large spiders with my son Ryan who has an interest in these things that will hopefully blossom into a sustainable business.Probably should visit America one day too.

I hope your "new day" turns out bright and sunny for you, Kris! :)
Your description of this subforum really resonates with me; I've found this to be a very unusual place, and try to find at least a little time each day to come see what's shakin' on the porch and usually get cheered up by what I find. :D

I really enjoy these "mystery GAWs" too, with the suspense of who's gonna win and what they'll get, so thanks for your generosity, Kris!:thumbup:

I'm including a photo of a place I actually went to a couple of months ago. My daughter has been living in Spain for almost 4 years, and I dreamed of going to visit her sometime. I've also taught mathematics for over 40 years, and had always read about and seen photos of the impressive geometric patterns in the Alhambra, a Moorish palace/fortress in Spain. And over the Christmas/New Year holiday, I had the great good fortune of living the dream, spending 19 days with my daughter touring Spain. This photo was taken from the Alhambra, looking out over the Moorish quarter of the city of Granada, with mountains in the background (impressive to me, since I've always lived in relatively flat places).

Good luck everyone! I'm enjoying the pictures here! ;)

Good to hear things are looking up!

As for my place, I have been living here in the Yukon Territory about 4 years. So many beautiful places here in this territory. One of my favourites is Tombstone Park. I would love to spend some weeks backpacking all over it.

Not my photo...

Thanks Kris, for your kindness, thoughtfulness, and generosity.

Awesome thread. I'm going to have to dig up some pictures. Kudos on the Giveaway.

Im in! Great call on Falling Water. An amazing piece of architecture. If I had to pick something natural, it would have to be Glacier National Park.

If I had to choose something man made, it would have to be the Burj Khalifa. Another building you have to see to believe.

I've always thought Australia to be behind the times -not neccesarily a bad thing- and New Zealand 15 years behind us.
But for going back to a time long past whilst not owning an actual time machine I really liked this spot.

great walking and a few pints of Doombar and some crisps at the Belstone village freehouse on the way home.
Blackberries from the hedges on the side of the road.
Inventing the game "sheep pooh soccer " with my boys when they were little and making them laugh so much they forgot how far they were walking.

Sunrise over Arches Natl Park.

Thanks for the chance, some great photos here.

Not sure why, but I've always wanted to see the Great Pyramid in Egypt. If only to be a Pharoah for a day....

Sorry to hear of your Dark Days. I thought I was the only one having it rough. After my bills got paid I had $27.00 in my account. There are still some Angels out there. Someone gave me a check for $500.00 just for being a nice guy.

Thanx for the give away count me in.

Glad to hear things are looking up for you. Speaking of looking up, I would like to see the Northern Lights someday. I have seen pictures, but I just can't believe the sky could really look like that.
