Day at the Lake.

That's some nice sky Magneto....you know what they say " red sky at night shepards delight, red sky in morning shepards warning " so I'm guessing you will have a good day tomorrow !!!

"They" may not have ever lived in the Pacific Northwest before. It is raining as I write.:thumbdn:

But it ain't over yet!

Pit Dog, in the picture below the Trillium, is that the West Coast version of Skunk Cabbage (Lysichitum americanum)? (We have a different type of Skunk Cabbage in Ontario - whole different genus).

If so, a useful plant. In fact, I understand it was referred to as 'Indian's Wax Paper' and was used as such by a lot of the Coastal Natiives.

Doc

Yeah it's Skunk Cabbage alright...here is a better pic below,I have been told that the first nations people used to eat the roots !Do you have any pics of yours?

Very nice pics. Very nice indeed. It never ceases to amaze me the amount of lumber that gets away and is unused. A man could get very rich if he just figured out a way to sell or use that stuff.

I don't have a dog but I sure would like a kennel like that up the hill from my house.:) Looks Indianish.

Funny you say that, there is actually a reserve not quarter of a mile from where I took the pic !!!

We have a lot of reserves over here to. Funny that Georgia don't have any reserves but I found a lot of relics. But here there are reserves everywhere and no relics to speak of. :jerkit: Besides if you do find one your not allowed to pick it up. :grumpy: I was born to late. I would have loved to have had an experience like Lt. Dunbar. AKA dancing with wolves.

I watched that again the other day and my wife said that they could have picked a love interest that looked more like an indian !!!

You must have watched the cut up TV version. In the real version she portrays a white woman that the Indians found when she was a child, whom they raised. In the uncut version you get to see her flashback to when her parents were killed and her brother telling her to "run Christine run".

The beginning of the legacy of Forest "the running fool" Gump.:D

hey pitdog where abouts is that lake on the island? i think i might just have to drive on over there and do a spot of fishing :D

It is called Durance Lake and is near what they call the Highlands, about 20 mins outside of Victoria. Maybe one day we could meet up and do a hike !!!:)

Macclint, yeah it's Van Island ! South Island not too far from Sidney where the Airport is !!!

Sorry, this is the best I can do - no digital camera yet. Hope to rectify that soon. What camera are you using, by the way? I need something that will do good close ups (plant pictures) without costing a Busse and a half. :)

In regards to eating the root, Western Skunk Cabbage (Lysichitum americanum) like Eastern Skunk Cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus), is a member of the Arum family and as such, contains crystals of calcium oxalate that can cause severe burning and inflammation to your throat and mouth which in some cases is severe enough to cause swelling and even death. (Common Poisonous Plants and Mushrooms of North America, Nancy J. Turner/Adam F. Szczawinski, Timber Press, 2001, ISBN# 0-88192-312-5, page 247)

Thanks for that link Doc, they do look quite different eh !!!
In my Field Guide it says..."Skunk cabbage roots were cooked and eaten in spring in times of famine. It is said this poorly named plant has saved the lives of thousands."

My camera is only a Vivitar...I think they are quite cheap, I have actually been thinking of getting another with more mega-pixels !!!

Pit....... great post and nice pics. Nice to see your "pup" was having as much fun as you were. Thanks for sharing:thumbup:

The root of Jack in the Pulpit (Arisaema spp.) which is also a member of the same family was also used for food, but only after drying the thinly sliced pieces (for months). This apparently rendered the calcium oxalate harmless. I've been meaning to try it, but haven't got around to it yet. Euell Gibbons did quite a bit of experimentation with it.

As far as updating your camera, I don't see why. The pictures are excellent.
