Day four, Bare ASH Naked.............

Nice job Tim. Out of curiosity, what's the advantage/draw of the rounded spine?

For me, I just like the look and feel of the rounded spine. I have heard others comment that when batoning a knife, it is easier on the baton because there is not the two sharp edges on top to cut into the baton. I have not batoned a knife to split wood, so I don't know that as fact though.

Makes sense as far as batoning goes, the baton would just dent rather than be torn up I would think. I like the look as well, one of the old GP Busse knives I have has a rounded spine and it is a feature I like aesthetically.

nice lathe shot. On the spine shot, the Ash tip looks stabbier than I would have expected with that thickness........did you do any tapering your self, or is that about the way it was except for the rounding?

At my last job I was asked to do some die polishing on a large lathe. I was given a bucket of dies, and told to polish them up. My supervisor was standing there with another guy talking to me. I chucked up a particularly large die, and whoops, the thing goes clanging off the ceiling, luckily missing any of us on the way up, and the way back down (20 lb piece of steel with nice sharp edges to crack the skull). My supervisor gets all mad at me for not tightening it up enough, then when he picks up the piece, he looks a bit sheepish and tells me "oops, I meant to take this one out of the pile, and tell you it was the only one that could not be polished on this machine.......we have to do it on a larger lathe with a special chuck" luckily no one got killed or lost any important bits. I never had to do that job again....

I didn't due any grinding to thin out the blade, I only rounded the spine. It is not as thin as it looks, the way the light comes off of the radius kind of hides the actual thickness.

looks great. I have batoned knives a lot over the years and I have never had a problem with the blat spines. The only spines that chew up wood are the false edges, sharp or not.

Man that turned out good Tim. Terrific job. And I can still read Porkducci too! Kudos for careful buffing! :D

Not sure how I feel about the rounded spine but the satin job looks awesome and that ASH looks great nekkid!

Thanks for sharing the pics!

Beautiful work! I like the modified spine. Just enough variance to give it that tasteful exclusive custom look.

I have a Sebenza with a rounded spine and I like it very much. I can only imagine I'd like it on the ASH1 as well!

That is why those 1-300s suck :foot: :p

WOW!!! That looks good!

The rounded spine really looks great:thumbup:

Looks better than the LE's

Pretty freakin' COOL, randucci!! That's ONE WAY to get a CG, an LE & a HOG ASH1 all into one knife... With a rounded spine! I like it! :D:thumbup:
