One thing this place has opened my eyes to is how much you can really pair down for a weekend trip. I used to always bring a 60L pack for a weekend trip and admittedly took about the same amount of gear for 1 overnight as I would 4 days, only difference being the food.
No I find a small pack for the short trips much better. My newest pack purchased mainly for EDC is the maxpedition Falcon II. It is relatively small but expands to accommodate a great deal of gear if required. Comfortable to wear and even has loops at the bottom to attach foam padding/thermarest and sleeping bag if they are rolled together.
During the regular working day, the pack fits my 14" laptop in the main compartment quite nicely and will also hold my SLR in the large front pouch. Molle webbing all over the place to attach things including bottle holders and other pouch/pockets. A great little pack that can easily be used for 2 day trips as long as you plan accordingly.
