Hey there Beckerheads.
It's been a while since I took pictures of our day hikes so I figured today would be a good day to do so.

First check the trail map to get a rough idea of where you are going.

Took out the BK15 and the little guy, despite the fact he owns hundreds of dollars worth of custom/production knives, takes the blunt tip Mora. Why? Because it cuts the best. The BK14 is his favorite but I think he's on to the fact that I un-sharpened it. He's been really careful lately so I think it's time to put an edge on it.

Today was survival day.
First thing was fire. He loves hunting fatwood and found some right away. Then he found some dry leaves off the ground along with a dead tree that had dry branches off the ground.

Now that we found most of the fire making supplies, it's time for water. Found a water vine but he said "Daddy, we have Gatorade. We don't need to cut that." Fair enough. We still tracked down a small creek and found some quarts for sparking off the 15. It should be noted that I am 0/? with flint-steel fire starting so I want to work on that some more before I try and teach him. Also I don't like using a blade as the striker if I don't have to and I left the striker at home.

Found this plant in the creek and for some reason was thinking it was edible. Did not eat it, just took a pic to identify later.

Now it was time to get some food for the belly. Figured a figure 4 deadfall would work.

It looks like we got something. A rare breed of ramenhotdogimus. We don't kill without eating so fortunately I had the gear to process the game. Before we start getting ready to feast, time to get our bearings. We rarely stay on the trail and we had to go roughly north/east to get back.

We ate fast and he knocked a log onto the rock and moved it. I still explained the process and set it up for him to finish. Time to head out.

We also ran into some small bamboo so we made a small frog spear. He was not allowed to spear any frogs though. After a long conversation about frogs and what they taste like, we now have frozen frog legs thawing on the counter. He gets to find out tonight that chicken tastes like frog.

We also ran into a family with a puppy and a 4 y/o dog in the parking lot so we were trying to track them to see how far they had gone. My tracking skills are not great but I can get the easy signs.

One hour hiking. Two hours playing in the creek.

Like any responsible father (when mommy is not there) I said "sure, go climb the super high steep rocks".

Now a bunch of random knife pics of the 15 and mora.

Thanks for sharing! Looks like y'all had an awesome time!

So glad you are enjoying that 15. I still love those amazing handles you made for it!

He lives!!
For those that don't know, Dex did the wharning? and the parkerizing of the 15. All I can say is his skills are on point. The man has skills. The first pics I posted of the 15 (old post), it had blocky handle syndrome. I hav since thinned them out and now they are really comfy. They are green dyed box elder burl with ghost jade / toxic green / ghost jade liners that I inset moonglow into the spine.

Looks like you guys had a great day!

And that Dex/Becker blade is brilliant. You bringing it to the gathering?

Looks like a fun outing. Makes me want to get back out again. Been missing it. Good to see someone post an outing again. The 15 looks awesome man.

What a great day. I'm looking forward to my weekend, now. If you're coming to the gathering, you should bring your son. I'm bringing mine.

Awesome post Tanker. Been getting cabin fever pretty bad lately. Need the snow to melt so I can take the little one out. Posts like these definitely help tide me over. Thanks for sharing!

O.K. it has been settled.

Frog legs taste nothing like chicken.
I have been trying to get him to think for himself instead of listening to what other people say or Googling it. Not that I am trying to breed distrust, I just want him to make up "his" own mind. Something like this was easy. Cook frog legs and a chicken breast and sharpen his BK14 so he can use it for dinner.

The conclusion is........................................................... they taste completely different and he likes the frog better.

I really dislike frog. I didn't mention that to him because I think he should make up his own mind. Give me chicken or give me fish; not some odd black veined hybrid of the two.

Frog legs don't really do much for me either. Had them once when I was young, and didn't care for them, then tried them again as an adult, just to make sure I didn't like them just because I was a kid, haha. Turns out I still don't care for them.

Frog legs, the other other white meat. Cant help but sing Hello My Darling every time I have them. While at it, the legs are dancing/kicking. You know, just for fun.

Awesome looking 15. Thanks for sharing!

I remember having frog legs for the first time when I was in high school and they tasted exactly like breaded shrimp to me(they were breaded).

Great day out. Interesting mod on the BK15. How long is the blade now?

Can't be positive from your picture, but the plant may be Watercress (Nasturtium officinale).

Really enjoyed reading this. With a couple of young'uns myself I understand that there's nothing in the world like time in the outdoors with them. Thanks for taking the time to share it.

Lucky snare. You rarely see those dog/noodle critters in the wild. Great pics.
