decided to stretch the truckers legs today and go for a day hike and test out all my new blades.
hit the local mountains, had a DEET shower
to ward off the black flies and skeeters that were swarming in the muggy heat. Yakked with the Rangers who were posting notices of bears in the area.
hiked for a bit , then walked across the river, much to the amazement & wonderment of the city sheeple that were on the trail (OMG look honey, he's in the river with his boots, isnt that the strangest thing?)
Hiked into the bush and followed the boundary markers for about 1 Km. Found a nice patch of huckleberries so i stopped for a bit. My snack was a 12 grain bagel with herb cream cheese, topped with fresh huckleberries! I now have a shirt stained purple from wiping my berry stained hands on it.
took some time to test out the blades. first up was some chopping duty, with my new Becker BK7 with Ranger modded green micarta scales. (thanks CsabaCanada!). Chopped thru a few willow shoots and lashed together a crude shelter frame, which i tucked away for future use. Great knife, one of my favorite.
Next up was the KABAR M.U.L.E> folder. This knife is one of the best bang for the bucks i have ever seen. Built like a tank, super solid lockup, Boye dent, and it is so sharp it made short work of several 2" limbs (made into fuzzsticks, tucked away under a log for future use). The MULE will now be a permanent blade in my pack, thats how much i like it.
Next was my Emerson Bushman. Another excellent woods knife (have'nt tried it for skinning or dressing game yet). Using the tip i drilled a few holes and made a fireboard. Next i sliced a few large shavings for firestarting.
Next was the Spyderco Manix. This is one of the best folder woods knives i have used. It made quick work of 2" limbs into fuzzsticks, and quick work of making poles for a bigger shelter than the first one i built. This knife will also go into the pack as a permanent wood knife.
headed out of the bush, and saw a black bear about 100 feet away. I banged my
SS Sierra cup on a rock and Ursus Horrbilus took off. I recrossed the river and got back onto the trail.
headed back into town, got a 8 pack of Old Style Pilsner reeB and headed home.
great sunday.
