Day hikes (12 hours or less) that might go longer

You guys have some great ideas, which I knew you would. ;) I'm creating a shopping list of things I don't have and need to buy for my 2 day packs. Here's what I had come up with on my own:

Poncho (second pack)
Compass (second pack)
Pain killers (both packs)
Portable tablet stove + fuel (both packs)
Bic Lighter (second pack)
Water Purification (both packs)

This is what I got from you guys so far:
Military Emergency bandage (both packs)
Glow Sticks 2 (both packs)
High Quality space blanket (both packs)
Signaling mirror (both packs)
Sun Screen (both packs)
Poncho Linner (second pack)

In my Food stuff I pack granola bars, energy bars and hard candy. I've seen the Powerbar shots but don't buy them because they have caffeine. For some reason my body doesn't like it, but I can handle the caffeine in chocolate.

The Poncho linner sounds like a good idea for my second pack which is 3 times bigger then the first. Will take some pictures of it later today with the stuff I have so far. As always, keep the ideas coming. I'll sort throught them and deside what will work for me and what wont.

How about a whistle for signalling in case you get into trouble.

D'oh, I thought you had this listed Wildmanh so I only mentioned the mirror and stuff; good catch TonyC. Yeah, I'd definitely throw in a whistle into each pack too

What kind of metal cup would be good to go with this for heating water and or food? Also how are those little folding stoves that take the tablets?

+1 on the military cup. I would also include the military stove and some Esbit tablets. It's a great way to brew up a cup of tea or heat up an MRE pouch in a hurry without having to start a fire. You can go with the open bottom one below, which is so light that you will never know it's there.

Or the slightly heavier one below which has a bottom and reduces the risk of burning down the forest around you.

The whole kit, canteen, cup, and stove fit in the canteen pouch and make an unbeatable set-up for day hikes.

Thanks, I'll look into those. Saw them at a Military surplus store a few weeks ago and wondered what they were for.
