Traditionally I go heavy and pack a pretty good sized comprehensive survival kit for day hikes, along with a tomahawk, an RC5, a Koyote leuku and a HEST. Yesterday I backpacked 25 miles and summited in a driving hail storm, 65mph winds, in nothing more than a pair of softsoled mocs, a pair of light canvas TNF pants and a wool sweater with a 12 dollar Eddie Bauer collapsible daypack, a 32 oz bottle of water, a zippo, my Koyote Leuku, a Victorinox Officer Suisse and my fighting hawk stuck in my belt. I did the hike in record time and considered it recreational, even fighting ridiculous weather and being completely unprepared. I kept my hands in my pockets and my feet moving, and didn't have a problem staying warm in nothing more than a light wool sweater. I'm starting to find I don't need to bring everything with me (or spend alot of money) to be self sufficient and capable of handling sticky situations, so I think I'll go through the recreational packs and lighten up a bit. The Eberlestock Bugout Bag will stay comprehensive, but if you can afford to, I'd recommend going light.
