I carry a compact knife like this in my pack and have field dressed a bunch of game with it, including whitetail. I have built this knife with a stout blade keeping it as light as possible. Notice how much I tapered the tang besides drilling out some extra steel hidden behing the scales, it still balances just slightly to the handle which makes it lay nicely in the hand. Of course the scabbard has a loop to carry on the belt or to be used to tie onto the pack: thats where I keep mine. I forged this from 52100 high carbon steel heat treating it to Rc 58-60 using my Evenheat furnace. Special attention was given to a fine grain strurcture. The Blade is flat ground with hammered texture on the flats. The handle is professionally stabilized and dyed spalted maple. Overall length is 8 1/4 inches with the blade at 4 1/4 inches and weighs in at 4.4 ounces.
