Dayton 1x42 question

I have put a number of handles on knives and am thinking I would like to get a belt grinder and start doing a bit more with knife making. I want to start with a less expensive belt grinder in case I don't stick with it. I have watched for a second hand belt grinder for a while. Seems like the big 2x72 rigs are only a few hundred dollars cheaper than new.

I spotted a 2nd hand 1x42 Dayton belt grinder (1/2hp) along with a number of belts for $150 obo. I recognize it doesn't have speed control, but would this be a reasonable starter belt grinder at that price? Are there ways I can gain speed control with a unit like this?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I got a 1x42 grinder frame with wheels etc but no motor new from Lee Valley tools for just under $100.00 new and bought a brand new 1/2hp motor for just over $100 (all cdn money). If it is in extremely good condition and includes a ton of new belts it sounds decent, but if it is beat up and the belts are junk, it might be a bit rich IMHO...

It is not a wicked setup by any means, but you can definitely grind knives on it. Even if you step up later to a 2x72, you will still find uses for it.

The thing is unused. Guy is retired and bought it thinking he would begin knife making. Never got around to it. He is too into woodwork. He says he has about 10 belts for it.

I already have a 4x48 belt sander and wheel that I use for woodworking and a million other things. Impressive how useful it is. So I know what you mean if I step up one day.

Is there a big difference between 2x42 and 1x42? Should I be waiting for a 2"?

I definitely want a 2 inch and am working on building one. 2 inch will make life easier and belts last longer but I am sure more seasoned vets will give you better feedback.

Most of the 2 X 42 out there are 1/3 HP. That Dayton sounds like it could work for you. Perhaps try for a better price. By the way there are quite a few belt grit options in that size.
I have an ol' rickety one I use now and then. I've looked around for another but most come with that 1/3 HP .
