Let me start by saying that I have been watching for a used grinder for quite awhile and to date I haven't found much in my area. I was hoping to find out if any of you guys had any experience with a Dayton 1x42 grinder? I found one for sale locally that is older, but in pretty good shape. I understand that it's not the perfect solution, but at present I don't have alot of extra funds to sink into another hobby.

I did several searches for it but can't find much on them and when I looked at the machine I didn't see a model number, but it looks pretty solid. It has a 3/4 HP 1725rpm motor and the frame is cast iron, even the belt cover is cast rather than sheet metal. It is a three wheel design and is belt driven so I think that with some pully mods I could make it a 3 speed machine pretty easily. The week link looks to be the platten(it is kinda wimpy). I think I could fab a better one out of some angle iron and add a piece of ceramic for the belt to ride on. Oh yea it also comes with a stand. Not sure what it is really worth; any ideas?

Thanks

Jeff

Is it the one that also has a disc grinder attached to the motor? There were a lot of 1x42 clones. I have the one with the disc grinder and I really like it. I have a 2x72 that I made but I still use the 1x42 quite a bit and use the disc a lot.

Mike,

I think that there was a disk at one time, but it is now MIA. My thought was that it might not be as useful on the end of the motor shaft as you would be stuck with one speed(1725 rpm) What kind of tasks do you use the disk for at that speed, and would it be better if it was variable speed?

As far as I know, if it's going to be variable speed it's going to cost quite a bit more or you'll have to make it yourself.

I don't mind the speed it's at, I might be just used to it. I use it to flatten tangs, handles and folder parts. I also use it to debur any hole I make in metal. I have a smaller disc sander that I made that's horizontal and is variable speed. They both throw things across the shop with about equal regularity. Speed or horizontal/vertical doesn't seem to make much of a difference for that.
