ok so I have a very limited budget at the present and currently getting stuff together to build a 2x72... in the mean time I need a belt sander. Right now I've narrowed it down to these two choices to make do for now:

DAYTON 6Y945 Belt/Disc Sander, 1/3 HP, 120V

Craftsman 1/3 hp Electric Belt/Disc Sander (21513)

they almost appear to be the exact same thing with different names... maybe I'm missing something?

also is there something else in the 150-200 price range that would be a better option?

I was in your exact boat and almost got the craftsman. I would highly suggest you save that money and put it toward your 2x72. I waited and sure glad I did. I couldn't be happier with my 2hp VFD grinder for $750. If you NEED a grinder now than grab the harbor freight 1x30. Many knives have been made on that thing and it doesn't set you back too bad. Though I would still recommend saving every penny toward the 2x72.

I would say it depends on how soon you'll have enough to buy the pieces for a 2x72. If it's a month or two I would wait for the 2x72. If it's on the order of a year or more the 1x30 or 2x42 might be a good option to get you by.

Interested in knowing the maker of the 2hp grinder with VFD for $750.00?

Not a bad thought at all. Doing it right (theorhetically) can delay the knife making by quite a bit of time.

What's your goal... the right machine, or the right now machine. If you want the right now, grab the files and sandpaper and get on it, no grinder necessary.
:D

Sourced parts, eBay vfd which for several months now I have had zero issue. Motor from a website that I can find if you're truly interested and the grinder chassis and wheels and platen from Oregon Blade Maker. Thing is a workhorse, super impressed with it!

I went the same route as Fochops and couldn't be happier. I'm into it about the same amount.

I'm in the same boat but decided to but the craftsman. I definitely regret it. Knowing what I know now I would've just built my own. For $150-200 that's enough to buy all the steel for a 2x72 and some pulleys. Little pieces here and there and before you know it your grinding away.

Don't regret it too much. Find a use for the 2x48 once you upgrade. I have a 2x72, soon to have a second one, and I still bought a cheap 2x48 to set up with Norton cloth belts solely for sharpening.
