Can anyone tell me which blades give the best shave, without being too aggressive? I'm looking to make the switch from Mach III/Fusion and really need some startup info.
Are Personna blades good?
Thanks.

Yes......The Red Personna are great blades. Probably a good one to start with.
As you are going to find out, you are probably going to have to try a few different ones to find what works best for you. I have tried several blades that alot of people rave about and they just didnt work for me. (Derby..and Yellow Gillettes) Get a sampler pack and try different ones.
The baldes that I like the best are: Red Personnas, Astra Platinum, Feathers. The Personnas and the Astras are probably better choices to start with. The Feathers are the sharpest of the three.

The Dorco ST300 is a very smooth and mild blade. E-mail me your postal address and I'll send you a few to try out.

I recently picked up a Merkur Long Handle closed comb 23c and I'm very pleased with it.

I would suggest getting one of the sampler packs of razors blades. Then you can try out different brands to see which are best for you. So far I have tried the Merkur blades, the Feathers, and the Personnas. For me, the Personnas have far and away been the best.

Is $39.99 + $2.00 shipping too much to pay for a 1969 Gillette Black Adjustable that appears to be in gorgeous condition?

I have no idea if that's a good value, but if you check the Badger & Blade forum they have reviews of lots and lots of razors and blades. You will probably be able to find a review of that razor there.

Also keep in mind certain blades perform different in certain razors. You have to find the right combo for you. You can take others recomendations as a starting point, but it will come down to alittle trial and error.
I agree that Badger and Blade has a wealth of information.

Ask Mr. Kohai999 by e-mail. He follows that market.

I've been likeing the Bic (yellow box) and super irridiums. feathers are good, but don't try them first off. I think it comes down to what you can get. besides at the price, may as well try a few!

If it comes with a case, it is a pretty decent price, if not, it should.

Truthfully I think any DE blades are better than the cartridge style blades. I used the Walmart DE blades and what ever I found locally for over a year and was happy with them. I did find a killer deal on 200 Derby blades on the net and tried them. Yes I think they are a better blade but would have no problem useing any DE blade. Sometimes I think the difference talked about on the net between DE blades gets a little overblown. I'd suggest not getting a bunch of different stuff at first. Pick up a ajustable razor and a few packs of blades. Dial the razor down low and give it a try. Stick to the same setup and after your really happy with it then go ahead and try different blades and see for yourself if there is much difference. Make it easy foryourself at first and don't give yourself too much to play with until you have learned how to get a good comfortable shave.

Squire over on www.shavemyface.com reviews blades. He has an entire thread for just that purpose. In my personal opinion I think the best blades available today are the Super Iridiums. Smooth, sharp and they last me 7 or so shaves.

I picked up two old Gilettes a few years back at a local antique store for a dollar a piece. Both are in excellant condition, didn't know know they were worth that much back then as I was still using straights, wish I would have gotten the few others they had as well.
They also had very old Personna blades in a box display at .25 cents a pack. They were the best blades I have tried to date. I think they were better than the new Personnas by far. I need to drop by that antique store again. The last time I was in there, they had an old Gillete in a case that also held a few blades for five dollars. Not to mention the old razor hone that I have never seen the likes of again.

A buddy of mine texted me pics of his late grandfather's razors. One is a Valet Auto Strop and the other is a WWII era Schick injector with the yellow plastic handle. His grandfather told him that he carried the Injector with him during WWII, instead of using what was issued. They're a couple of beautiful old DEs.
He was thrilled to find out that you can still get Injector blades. He plans on getting some and using that old Schick. As for me, I've always been a Gillette fan, largely due to the fact that my dad used one for many years and is about to go back to using it.

BTW, are the Wal-Mart Personnas any good? They list a 3 pack of the 10 blade packs for $5.58. That would be 30 blades. I could shave a lot for that price.

Just pulled the trigger on a Futur. Unlike many others that are making "the switch" from Mach3 to DE, I've actually used a DE before. So at least I know what to expect. I'm hoping, however, that the Futur is light years better than the old Gillette clone that used to tear my face up. Oh well. Enough of the crazy priced Mach3 stuff. What a racket.

My experience of different blades is rather limited, but here goes:

Derby, Korea?-very reasonable and consistent. Bic made in Greece, generally very good but quality rather variable, fine value. Merckur, Germany, mediocre and overpriced for what they are. Feather, Japan, more expensive (but think how much catridges cost...) than the others but very high quality, totally consistent and shaves my face closer than anything I've used. Can't find a blade that likes my face better(but I will keep looking)Got some free blades which were made in Israel (Crystal?)they were totally appalling cut the face without cutting the beard! If they were the only blades around I would grow a beard(and I very much dislike them)

Of course, shaving soap/cream plays a role . Proraso I like, although a little drying and Taylor of Old Bond Street make superb creams(soap too)keeps the face well moisturized whilst shaving, first rate range of fragrances too.

I think you'll like the Futur:thumbup: Having said that, I just got mine and I know it's a keeper that will remain in my rotation, but my early preference tends to be slightly toward one of my three Gillette Adjustables. This is mainly because I find the Futur more aggessive, heavier and the Gillettes have a smaller more controllable head. Again, these are my early preferences. I will say this...I can get an acceptable shave quicker with my Futur, but it seems I can get a tad bit closer shave if I spend the time with one of my Gillettes. Again, still experimenting with blades, technique etc.

Here's to enjoyable BBS shaves:thumbup:

I've moved on to Straight razors (you wouldn't believe how great a shave they are) but when I was doing DS razors I used mainly a Merkur HD - simply the best DE. I also had a Futur that I used on occasion. I liked the Futur a lot, but be really careful not to open that thing up much. I never opened it past like 2. I tried about every blade you could name, but the best by far were Derby's. you can get them on flea-bay for about $0.12 a piece.

The key to shaving with any of these DE's is to use as little pressure as possible. Seriously. You have been conditioned by the 2-3-4-5 blade combo's to put a lot of pressure on the razor to shave and to also scrape over and over. You now need to learn proper shaving which means no pressure and multiple passes. Shave the foam off then lather up and do it again in a different direction - no pressure. You will wind up with the best shave of your life (until you try a straight). lol.

So far, the Derby blades are my favorites. They give a very close shave without irritating my face. I can use them in my Gillette adjustables and Techs without cuts or irritation.
