Dead Trees (Pics)

Hollowdweller - That chimney top is cool, I'd like to sit on top of it for a while.

It really is. North Fork Mt is 24 miles long and is a rocky face the whole way culminating in Chimney Rocks and chimney top

On top of Chimney top.

This is chimney rocks from about a mile south. About as far as you can see in the distance is that rock in front with the dead tree.

Immediately behind the rock with the tree is one I call "the old man" because it's so eroded it looks wrinkled:

This is way farther South my friend Kate in the morning watching fog rise from the valley below:

Cool pix, HD. I have had a lifelong passion for geology, so I am always a sucker for good solid rock underfoot. I get plenty of granite here in the sierras, but sometimes it is nice to see limestone for a change. I grew up in upstate NY, and lived in St Louis and Utah for a while, where I played on limestone all the time.

Hmmm, maybe that would be a good idea for a new thread - great rock outcrops. You supply the limestone, I'll supply the granite.

Here's a few of my favorites.

A dead tree growing on limestone on Chimney Top on North Fork Mt.

Depending on the quality of the digital image, if you zoomed up on the snag so that just a bit of surrounding rock framed it, I think the photo would become truly outstanding. Just a hunch.

Great pics, the one showing you and your friends looks like you are all a bit bushed, after seeing the terrain it is no wonder. :)

Well we were actually pretty fresh then that was about 8am in the morning.

But that was the last morning of a 24 mile hike so we were slightly grungy.

North Fork Mountain Trail runs all along the top of the mountain. Awesome scenery.

The only bad thing is that there is zero water so you have to carry all of your water.

This means you gotta sort of rethink your normal menu and everything you carry to compensate for the extra water.

The good thing is that at about 12 miles there is a road that leads to a radio tower on the Mountain.

When we went we took 3 cars. We all met up on one end Friday night and camped on the north end of the trail. Then Saturday we dropped a car off with water and a cooler on top of the mountain and then proceeded to the south end. Started hiking about noon on Sat, camped, then reached the car on Sunday had a cookout, got more water and headed on and then camped Sunday night Monday night and made it out of the woods about 2pm on Tuesday.

Ran out of water about the last 2 miles. Great trip.
