So, I had seen a lathe for sale the other day on another forum about 120 miles from me and has planned to go see it later this week. Long story short I had to go today if I wanted it due to another impending offer.

I just got home from a very long day, and I'm the proud new owner of a craftsman 12" lathe. 36" between centers, not QC gear box (but it looks like probably a full set of change gears), 2 3 jaw chucks (one good one kinda crappy), 1 new in box 4 jaw chuck, 3 faceplates, 3 dead centers, an MT 3 chuck for the tailstock, a boring bar setup, toolholders, a box full of cutting tools, and a few more bits and pieces.

The lathe itself is completely original (even has the original motor) and looks darned near brand new. There are 2 or 3 TINY nicks on the ways where it looks liek somebody dropped a faceplate or chuck once or twice, but other than that the ways look new.

The best part though was that it only cost me $300 :D

No pics tonight, I'm not unloading until tomorrow (Hey! Butch! What're you doing tomorrow evening? ;) ) and I have some re-assembling to do. After that I'll get some pics and add them to this thread.

$300$ ?? For all that ? :grumpy: Why can't I ever find a deal like that ? You lucky bugger. Well, good for you :) Make sure you post a pic or 2, you know, kind of like rubbing a little salt in ;)

Nice score! I'm working on getting a fully automatic cnc'd surface grinder for a song, it's far from sure at this point, but in the works!

:)

You know, I talked to a friend (and fellow tool junkie) about the ebb anf flow of good deals and he made a good point. You make your own luck on this stuff. If you're not looking for a deal you'll never find one. My problem is that I'm always looking :)

This one was posted at the practical machinist forums. I pretty regularly check that, eBay, craigslist, etc. The timing on this happened to be JUST right, and I had to bail on half a day of work and drive until midnight to get it home, but in the end I think I got $800-1000 of machine and tooling for $300. I didn't know when I left the house that I'd be buying it yesterday. I got a call on my way to work and told the guy I'd be there that night.

It helps to have a flexible boss and a supportive wife... :D

Pics after I unload/re-assemble.

If you're busy I can probably manage something creative with the engine hoist since I can back the truck into the shop. If you want to come over and help/see though you're more than welcome. I'll give you a call when I'm on the way home from work or something.

Deker, cool! Do you know approximate age? Can you tell me what color the lathe is, please? Thx!

what do you think about the old shopsmith lathes? my grandpa has one that has to be about 30+ years old. its a full size lathe too. works like a charm. you just wont see me owning it anytime soon. im sure one of my two uncles is taking it. cant wait to see the pics of your lathe.

Man, we've got to start hanging out! I can't ever find a deal on stuff like that!

Thanks, deker! Those old Atlas/Craftsman lathes were pretty decent.

i might even be able to use it now and thenahhahahah:D

Yes, you can come over and use it :)

Nice score...I guess we can look forward to some of those damascus pins

Maaaaaaybe. I'm honestly not sure if it'll be worth the trouble. I have to see how much of a PITA masking to etch them will be. Though, If I'm smart and creative I could probably do corby-style fasteners too.

I need to start making a scrap pile of aluminum to practice on, I've only ever run a lathe once

Congratulations!I picked up a Southbend heavy 10 a few weeks ago for $500 and it came with about 200 new carbide cutters and enough extra parts to make another lathe. Arent new (old) tools fun?

Alright, finally unloaded and re-assembled. I do have some adjustments to make (after re-asembly, one drive pulley wobbles a bit and is knocking the cover open. I'm just too tired to muck with it tonight.)

So, without further ado:

and the tooling, etc. I could start working tonight except that I don't have a center drill.

More detailed pics will probably be added to the gallery later, but that's it for now.

Alright. You win. ;)

I wasnt trying to one-up you. I know how cool it is to get new tools, thats all. If you need a center drill I have a few extra, PM me your address and I will send you one. I'll even throw in a few carbide cutters if you need them.
