So, I stopped by my local machine shop to see if I could get some pieces of O-1 to make a couple of filing jigs out of for a decent price (turns out I'm better off ordering the jigs pre-made from Sheffield...). But before heading out I asked if I could poke around the scraps for some knife steel. Turns out the guy had a couple boxes of O1 and W1 round bar "scraps". ~5/8" to ~1" diameter by about 8" long...for $1 a piece! I only had $22 or I would have bought them all. Told the guy I'd be back once I had some cash in my pocket again to clean up the rest of the floor space for him :)

So, this guy just made my "Christmas knife" list....

Just had to share with some folks who'd "get it"...I doubt my wife really will...

wow deker, where was the address of that place again? i am at school but if i drive real fast i bet i could beat you to it!! haha, great find.

deker got it and he s going to forge it to shape and show me how to forge also
i can see it now deker and i co op he gets it close and i clean it up :D using my mighty 1x42 no less:foot:

Now now children...don't fight ;)

I figure I'm going to make the owner of the shop a nice knife and hopefully I'll get a steady supply of scraps at good prices...Trust me, there was probably 50-60lbs of $1 a piece steel there today....and he said he'd have more. I'll share, don't worry...if for no other reason than to watch you guys whomp on 1" round for a while...it's hard work ya know.... :)
