So, I have to understand this: Didn't you snag the one from day before yesterday? So two identical Dui Chirras in 3 days? Man, I thought I was badly infected! Although they would make a beautiful matched pair on the wall. And your eye is correct; the tools are the same, but the antler on today's is much nicer.

But my criteria has always been that I can justify the expense and they are two totally different knives as along as the handles are different! No twins so far though...
Norm
Yeah, I had to break into credit card mode. It didn't just seem to be the tools (though that caught my attention first). The geometry of the blades looks different. It could just be the light or maybe it's just from the cho creep. And, the handles are shaped somewhat differently on each.

I don't collect as much as I get khukuris I like or find interesting. This is the second set of twins I got (the other was two 12" Chits with horn handles which aren't rare - at least now). I've had to stop myself from getting another chit when they pop up or I'd have four or five of them (like the three carved handle AKs with different materials or four light Sher AKs of different lengths) and I wouldn't have tried some of the others that I've really liked once I had them in my hand. I have to push myself to try new things sometimes.

Now I can live in fear of the Chandan cracking. Maybe I can display them in an aquarium filled with mineral oil.

I hadn't realized SASSAS had deteriorated this much...virus really hit him hard. Darn shame... he seemed like such a nice guy, too.

Deteriorated? This one's a goner, Munk. Time to get him a belt sander.

SASSAS, buff off the wax coating on your chandan and see how oily it is. If it's oily, seal it with a few coats of Watco Danish Oil and be done with it. If it's dry (and if it is, it's probably already cracked) soak it in mineral oil, Ballistol, tung, linseed, or whatever you have laying around for a few days. Then seal it. (Mad props to Arty for turning me on to Watco.)

Do not fear the chandan. Chandan is your friend.

It's interesting you used Watco - I just put it on the Yangdu special and the cracked handle Foxy Folly blem I got. It's chandan.

Funny wood. Light, but seems tough.

Thanks Astro! Need to pay closer attention. Geez, I almost missed the announcement the other day of the 20" Memorial Chiruwa WWII with elephant ivory handles and hand tooled leather scabbard that's coming soon. ;)

If I'm not mistaken the Shaha is just an 18" AK with a nice handle, made for the Nepalese holiday I guess. (Oops, take it back. Way too light for that. Unless that should read 18" and 29 oz.? Both my 18" AK's are at least 28 oz. Sure looks like an AK though.)

Ooohhh.... Just got the Shaha today (and yes, my mailman has a contract out on me).

Still has a label on it I can't read... But it's no AK. If I had to try to classify it, It seems like a dui chirra and bigger version of my Yangdu special. I can't believe it, but this like the Foxy Folly feels almost like I ordered it (the difference being I would have known enough to know what to ask for).

SASSAS. Is the Shaha really 18" 19oz ?

Beautiful khuk............ :)

I still haven't gotten along to replacing my scale, but 19 oz. is just about right. Definitely not a typo (i.e.29). Beautiful, beautiful scabbard.

And, while the karda and chakma are two other woods, both are well made.

The scabbard is probably the second best I've ever received. The best being the BAS I gave up a while back. It was a super Super Frog.

Wow the Shaha must be damn fast. Just about what I really want in a khuk. Right length, good weight (fastness) and the beautful dui chirra fullers......*drools* :o

I got lucky on this one... Just goes to show you how luck works... When I knew less than nothing about two months ago when I started this (as opposed to now when I simply know nothing), I passed on a beautiful knife with a light handle because at the time I didn't like (or more correctly appreciate) light handles, even though I wanted a blade like that and thought that particular one was beautiful (there might have been some gold fittings or something too). I've been kicking myself for it since.

This time, I got a knife I couldn't really see much of and knew nothing about most likely because it was the same situation as before and I got what may be the best knife I own. It's got a nifty cho on it too that wasn't readily apparent. The clitoris/penis is a little oversized and looks a little like a flower with the stigma part of the pistil raised above the petals.

Happiness is missing out on a beautiful little wood YCS Karda #9 and getting home to find reassuarance that they're all going to the right place. :)

9 inch 4 ounce horn handle Bilton by no Kami Mark. $20 YBB
But it was sold.
However, when my order of 10/11/05 came in, one was in the box along with the Sarge Knife.
Thank you Yangdu!

Now a question... She made no mention of payment for this knife...
Is it considered bad form to offer to pay for this extra knife?
Also, it had a small rust(I think) spot on it, which is actually larger than on any of the 'blems' that I have gotten, so I assume that she figgered that after discounting it from the $20.00 that they are going for, that it was not worth the shipping for a daily special... So it may have been meant as a gift...There was NO paperwork in the box, so I just do not know...
GREAT little knife!!!

Thanks.

I don't use anything before Watco, since it is a great sealer. I just remove the wax with a solvent in most cases. Watco can be used before other finishes, or used on its own. If I want a satin finish, as with a Villager, it is perfect. If the handle is horn, I use 4 coats, with 8 hours between them. Soaking the horn for longer than stated on the can is fine, but I always wipe off the excess after each coat.

Watco produces a horn finish that seems to prevent cracking, and a nice satin finish on wood. If I want a shine on the wood, I can always top the Watco with a coat or two of a wipe-on-Polyurethane or a wiping varnish.

It is great stuff by itself.
