Also, the YCS comes with TWO knives instead of one and a burnisher...
The Awl is used for burnishing I guess, or you could use the spine of one of the knives...
The awl is just an awl, i'm afraid. Most come butter soft from what I hear. I would have liked the kamis to fully harden the awl. The flates would make a great chakma and the edges would throw a mean spark, i bet.

The edge of the kardas is what I meant to be used for in place of a chakmak. The awl would be nice almost full hard but sharpened makes for a way to make holes that aren't so apt to tear out in cloth and other materials.

I was wondering why the awls come dull. It makes sense now.

On a related note, I actually use that awl quite often. (It's the only one to date that I haven't managed to break.) The exposed tang on the butt can be a little rough on the hand but it works well enough. Now that my hole punch is dying, it's apt to be used a little more.

I was going to replace the awl with a sharpening steel- ground to a point.

Put the YCS awl handle on it. Matches.

How could I pass up on what looks like a AK/M43 hybrid?

I knew it! Couldn't have been anyone else! (-:

Nope, no hyrid, just an AK with a long handle. What's interesting about this is that the finger grooves are all in the horn, and not made around the tang. On my finger grooved AK, the finger grooves are made in the wood and the metal, with the tang being scalloped as well. I think this looks nicer. Just remembered, this will make an excellent match to that long-handled 3-pin M43 you have. Two unique horn models in a pair.

Don't know if you know Randalls, but if I had snagged this one I would be in the market for a nice M-14 Attack with black micarta handle. That would make a nice pair...!

BTW, if I was not saving up for something else, this is definitely one I would have gone for. I do like my finger grooved one, and the grooves are great in a knife like the M-14, but in a kukri they can be a problem sometimes if you're doing a lot of chopping. One of the advantages of the style is to be able to let the knife roll a bit in your hand on some swings or to switch position, and that is harder with finger grooves.

More excellent YCSs! Also, more variants like today's finger groove AK seem to be popping up. Hope they keep on coming.

This shark was tied up in the jury duty net today and could not get out to play.:grumpy:

Guys, that katujne is a "Lady Yangdu Special" ain't it? It ain't marked "sold", but I'm almost scared to ask, got "sharkbit" twice this week already. Maybe I'll just sleep on it, I deal better with rejection after my morning cup of lifer juice.

I was somewhat stunned it was stil there as well... If I didn't have one already (and it's NEEEMMMMM), and think others should get a shot at this, I'd have jumped on a second by now.

I would get it this instant, if I hadn't just gotten a beautiful FF. Then, for Christmas, I'm kinda thinking about a nice BAS (Gurkha Wanna-be). While that Katunje has got to be about the prettiest blade profile I've ever seen, I've maxed out my sharking budget for a while. That will have to wait for Summer and the employment it will bring. :(

God, I hate having to just drool over something so nice.

On second thought, maybe I could cut something else from the Christmas list...

Well, I'll see if it's still here tomorrow afternoon. That will decide it... God, that graceful curve is seriously my ideal profile. I would love to see a similar silhouette on something a little bigger, too! A super katunje, perhaps? Drool...

I think someone posted that they have a 15" katunje?

The UB Salyans are pretty close... In addition to the 12 and 15 inchers, there were four 18" blems with Chandan handles that posted a while back. I have one and they feel pretty similar and the soak in mineral oil actually closed the split in mine until it was unnoticable. There may be another of those waiting to show up - a 15" chandan ended up in a mixed blems list...

The other close thing is the Shaha Special. It's looks and feels like a like a dui chirra katunge to me.

Randall Standard Model 14 Attack O-1 blade
(A) RA-M14: $395.00
Randall Model 14 Attack Stainless Blade
RA-M14S: $440.00

Gakk!!!   Four hundred dollars!!!!!! :thumbdn:

Believe me, that's a fair price. Randall's current waiting list is 5 years. I have had a Model 25-6 Trapper in the stag/brass combination with wrist thong and O-1 steel on order for 18 months now, and it should be ready in mid-2008. I just hope they still have stag in stock when it's ready!

The last Randall I bought was a planned purchase that took all my savings for quite a while; it is a 2-8 dagger in SS with nickel silver fittings and white micarta CSM (customer supplied materials), and came with both the standard leather / sharpening stone sheath and an alligator leather sheath which is pretty striking to say the least. That one ran $625 and is worth it IMO. (Of course I would say that having paid it. (-:) It is a matched set with an older 1-8, also in white micarta CSM and SS. They were made at different times but happened to have the exact same options, and I bought them months apart from two different people who happened to pick them up from the Randall store in person.

I have been in the market for an M-14 for a long time, but these HI knives keep interfering!

Seriously, you should go over to the Randall forum if you want to see some hard-core collectors in action. Some of those guys make HIKV look like a minor affliction. :D

That's a great idea Nam, but if you look at the 18" Sher special hanshees, I think they might be pretty close to what you are thinking of. (?)

Why is the special still there? I already ordered one Khuk this week. I can't do it again, but that's a sweety knife. Why yall no buy?

For the lucky guy who got the sword - How much does it weigh and how do you like it?

One of these days I need to purchase a kitchen scale so that I can answer questions like this. It weighs slightly more than my Manjushree - other than that, I can't say. Point of balance is about 5" forward of the guard. The handle is long enough to get two large hands on without too much crowding.

Right now the handle is soaking in mineral oil and I've only done some very quick cutting and thrusting with it. I like it so far but I'm reserving my judgement until after I've wrung it out a bit. It's considerably different than anything else in my collection so I'm very happy that I got it for that reason if nothing else. And, of course, the carving is wonderful.

It has a very unusual feel compared to the stuff that I'm familiar with. It's hard to put my finger on it exactly. I'll be able to describe it better after some more work with it.

The pumpkins should be dirt cheap on Tuesday, so expect some videos and pics later on this week. I hope the cat likes eating pumpkins as much as he liked the watermelons.

Well, we carved the Jack-O-lantern today, and I found that my dog likes the pulp we scraped out. At least the first couple lbs. After a while he got tired of it.

I used to keep chickens. They like chopped up pumpkins. Mine would always get several after Halloween.
