Wow, nice snag on the YCS! The smooth wood on these is very pretty (I'd swear that was chandan though! Dark for satisal.), and the lines of the blade are sweet. Gorgeous red leather scabbard as well. That's also a heavier blade for a 17" knife, so should be a fantastic chopper. I have some larger ones but would love to have a 17".

P.S. Cracks me up after all this time the're still leaving the tip off the awl...:)

P.S.S. I have no idea how common they've been, but the BDC's are great camping knives, and the 14" is the most useful size. These have excellent handles.

wow those are some handsome knives! whoever got that YCS better show some pictures when it comes in, I want to see that in action!

just sent paypal. happy boy.

it'll be #2 for me (of many to come, i'm sure). it's my newest knife love.
-couple weeks ago i was talking to my father re: the ghurka v. 40 train robbers story, and his response was 'yeah, i've got one of those. haven't touched it in 40 years, got it in Vietnam, i think. You want it?' turns out he got an 18" khukuri in the early 70's while in Vietnam and/or surrounding countries. sat in the back of his gun cabinet for the last 38 years. blade oxidized all to h*ll, wood handle dried out and needing some love. i spent some time with the wood handle, de-oxidized the blade, belt sanded it back into shape, resharpened - just a big tune-up it needed badly.
then i took it out in the woods to try it out. and now i am very much in love with khukuris. it is a chopping/slicing machine. and i'm pretty sure i've got the cheap POS version (no makers mark, etc). means a lot to me b/c it's my father's, but can't wait to get my hands on this one and see the difference!

i'll have to post pics of the before/after tune-up once i get the BDC in hand. that way i can take side by side pics so that i have an actual HI blade in an HI forum picture post :)

as an aside - the sheath on the old one looks pretty unsalvageable. wood sheath, leather overwrap. leather is absolutely shot (with 40yr old green military duct tape holding it together on top). i've seen a couple DOTD knives come with a generic (KEMF?) sheath. are those sheaths available seperately from HI if i can't save the original?

thanks in advance to whoever knows the answer to that one.

Did you happen to see where Nepal forbid the exportation of Chandan wood and objects that contain the same?

Glad you got the BDC!!!
You may want to just save your fathers momento. It may not be worth a whole lot in monetary value, but will increase in sentimental value to you over the years. If you were to break it, it would be nearly impossible to replace. I would just oil it up and let it live in the original sheath that has been the home it has known all these years.

If you really must use it (your choice to do so). Then, Auntie does sell the Kami Emergency Medical Fund sheaths separately. There are two styles. One with a straight spine and deep belly and one with an angled spine and shallower belly. Email Auntie with blade length, width and spine thickness measurements and maybe she can help you figure out which one will work best.

Check out the Kami medical sheaths thread here, and perhaps one of those will work for you. You could also post specs on the blade length and width and one of us could let you know if one of these sheaths will work for you. Steve Tall has a thread on the Camillus sheaths he's modified, and Yangdu is selling them for just $20 each plus shipping.

Karda are you talking aftermarket sheaths or HI scabbards? I didn't know HI sold scabbards separately, and only know of the one style of kami medical sheaths.

Thanks for any info.

No, I didn't see that. Was this recently? Figures. I have about 50 pounds of the stuff and it makes for great handles. I wonder if they are experiencing a shortage? My favorite handles are hill walnut and chandan, with some neem also being beautifully figured.

Some awesome things not seen in a while!

Bhakta Kami is turning out to be a serious star player!

karda,
i agree completely re: putting it up and away as a memento of my father - and you're right, it's not about the $$ value of an old working/well-used blade, it's about the 'to me' value. kind of funny - the Busse's, Martin's, high-end blades that i've got are all users, and the 45 year old beat-up user khukuri is going to be my one and only safe queen. the sheath is b/c the blade is actually coming through the sheath on the concave side of the blade, and there is some mold in the leather/top of the wood. i don't think it's going to be long term healthy for the blade to stay in there if i can't clean that sheath up.

and putting it up is why i got the BDC today! b/c now that i've used a khuk, i've got a serious case of khukuri love, and i need to have, no, i HAVE to have one that i can use.

-i took it out to see how it worked, how it felt (and it was most definitely a working blade in it's past), b/c it was dad's (kind of in tribute, i guess, although just in my head).

the way my neurotic brain works, i'll probably have a dozen khuks in a year or so....

I'm a talking about the KEMF sheaths, bro. Auntie does not have H.I. scabbards to sell separately. There are Two styles of KEMF sheaths, as i described. I have one of each.

Welcome to our world. Why only a dozen, that is only a fraction of the selection here at H.I...... are you sure it's going to need to take that long? the kami's gotta eat ya know. :p
BTW, watch out for that Svashtar guy.... he had ta buy a whole nuther house just for his collection.

The YCS and BDC are both gorgeous. Good snags. Can't speak personally for Rajkumar's work, but my Cherokee Rose is by Bhakta, and it's exquisite.

LOL! Thanks, I didn't know that. I just sent PP to Yangdu for 2 of the KEMF sheaths and just got them, but had no idea they made different styles or would have requested one of each. My bad, should have researched more...

No worries, the ones I got look like they are for the larger blades. FYI, the ones I did get are 99% identical to the leather sheath that comes with the Cold Steel Carbon V coated blade kukri (with kraton handle). The only obvious difference is the helpful addition of the second snap.

Regards,

Norm

P.S. Just reread the KMF sheath thread and linked threads and see just the 1 sheath mentioned. ? Think I have two of the "deep belly" guys, and the other might be better for smaller more curvy knives like a hanshee or balance... If anyone can point me to a pic / description of the second type I would appreciate it!

Best, -N.

I have used the Mr.Clean Magic erasers to clean up mold/mildew on leather products, and it didn't harm the leather that I could tell.
Go over the leather product with neatsfoot oil or other leather conditioner when you're done. It may be one way to rescue an otherwise doomed leather scabbard.
