Thanks soupah. Got it! My next move was going to be to ask you about yours. I bought this one because: a) horn handle - my first on a HI khuk; b) got the magic numbers, 18" & 28 oz; c) looks similar to a GRS which I've been sharking for for over a month. I actually don't know a hanshee from a banshee, but it looked good and there's no time for soul searching when the water's full of sharks.
Would appreciate any info you've got about Hanshees in general and your new one in particular. Have you sharpened yours up and tried it out yet?
Well, I did a little research myself when the 3/02 DOTDs came up and I pounced on that other Hanshee. I can only tell you what you probably already know:
1) Hanshees are pretty rare...I haven't been around here long, but from my searches it seems that 18-inch Hanshees aren't often seen. In fact, I didn't see ANY Hanshees the same size as ours.
2) If I'm not mistaken (and I probably am), Hanshees are a derivative of M43 khuks with an even more exteme final bend. Hanshees "seem" to have larger curved handles than M43s in general- my Hanshee has an especially large handle, and I love it.
3) From what I've read, Hanshees can be good choppers, but they need to be used in a slightly different manner than a GRS or AK. Munk, who is another Hanshee owner, hints that he knows a bit about chopping with Hanshees. He could probably lecture us some more on All Things Hanshee.
4) Hanshee is also spelled "hansee," so if you do a search, try both terms.
My freakin' BEAUTIFUL walnut-handled 27oz 18" Hanshee is soaking in a tub of mineral oil right now. I have nothing to chop here in frigid urban Chigaoland right now, so I'll have to wait awhile to test it. Feels real good in the hand, though, and almost begs me to use it.
Does anyone else notice old crappy wood furniture around their house when they have a khuk in hand (and are tempted to perform test-chops)? I've got a beat-up old dresser from college days that's lookin mighty choppable lately.
Congrats again on that Hanshee!
