Deals for 3/06 -- Pix and four beauties

Yahoo! Done deal on the YCS! Man is my house zombie ready. The Salyan special by Bura is beautiful, congrats to the lucky shark that got that one!

Ok now I need to get my wife her eye drops for her scleritis and something to eat. Poor thing has been in so much pain one eye doctor misdiagnosed her a week ago. Now she has a raised bump in the white of her eye...OUCH.

That's almost identical to the one I got a few weeks ago, they are beautiful, and feel really nice with the engraving.
Congrats. I got the NEEM Salyan.

Thanks soupah. Got it! My next move was going to be to ask you about yours. I bought this one because: a) horn handle - my first on a HI khuk; b) got the magic numbers, 18" & 28 oz; c) looks similar to a GRS which I've been sharking for for over a month. I actually don't know a hanshee from a banshee, but it looked good and there's no time for soul searching when the water's full of sharks.

Would appreciate any info you've got about Hanshees in general and your new one in particular. Have you sharpened yours up and tried it out yet?:D :D :D

Well, I did a little research myself when the 3/02 DOTDs came up and I pounced on that other Hanshee. I can only tell you what you probably already know:

1) Hanshees are pretty rare...I haven't been around here long, but from my searches it seems that 18-inch Hanshees aren't often seen. In fact, I didn't see ANY Hanshees the same size as ours.

2) If I'm not mistaken (and I probably am), Hanshees are a derivative of M43 khuks with an even more exteme final bend. Hanshees "seem" to have larger curved handles than M43s in general- my Hanshee has an especially large handle, and I love it.

3) From what I've read, Hanshees can be good choppers, but they need to be used in a slightly different manner than a GRS or AK. Munk, who is another Hanshee owner, hints that he knows a bit about chopping with Hanshees. He could probably lecture us some more on All Things Hanshee.

4) Hanshee is also spelled "hansee," so if you do a search, try both terms.

My freakin' BEAUTIFUL walnut-handled 27oz 18" Hanshee is soaking in a tub of mineral oil right now. I have nothing to chop here in frigid urban Chigaoland right now, so I'll have to wait awhile to test it. Feels real good in the hand, though, and almost begs me to use it.

Does anyone else notice old crappy wood furniture around their house when they have a khuk in hand (and are tempted to perform test-chops)? I've got a beat-up old dresser from college days that's lookin mighty choppable lately.

Congrats again on that Hanshee!

Dick and Bill, can you post any decent photos of these dragon-carved YCS's?

Closeups of the karda carving; well, the whole thing if possible.

Really, really nice. Congrats on rare snags.

Actually, it's all new to me. The only reference to a Hanshee I've seen before is the M43/Hanshee hybrid on the HI website. That hybrid has a lot of curvature, probably more than an M43.

Let us know if you give in to temptation tonight and chop up a dresser or something. Photographs would be nice. We won't tell.:D

Otherwise, treat us to a post when you're able to address a more legitimate target.

Soupah, I am not surprised that you didn't find a lot because there have been exactly two hanshees in this 18" size. This one and the one soaking in your tub of oil. That's it. There were a bunch of 15.5" ones last year that all ran about 19-21 oz. by Bura, and one or two more so far this year in horn I think. The reason they were so hot at the time is that they were the first knives other than really the Junge and M43 in quite a while to go back to the std. bolster.

Comparing them to traditional hanshees is a bit of a stretch IMO, because they don't have nearly the curve, but it's as good a name as any for the HI model and they do have some hanshee features I guess. You would have to ask someone more knowledgeable than me. Personally I would call Bura's forward curving khukuri a hanshee type, and there were a couple pure hybrid hanshees last year that caused me some table pounding misses! I guess in looking at the two 18" models as well as the 15.5" ones I would say that the curve of the blade on these is the same, but on the older ones the handle continues the curve more, following the curve of the blade in the other direction. (If that makes any sense!)

I also have Rusty's old Sanu hanshee which does (as you say) have an M43 curve to it, but a different blade geometry and curvier handle. It is 17.5" and 24 oz.

Bottom line is that they are an excellent working khukuri with nice features.

Very cool. I could see the dragon's eyelashes!

It answered my question- the stylized dragon is quite like the one on my HI katana.

Many thanks.

Those Salyans are so sweet. I have one in antler that I clutch everytime I have a fever or hear a noise in the night. It just makes me feel better. I have a Rose for cutting down any would be attacker, but the Salyan is a comforting blade. It almost has a heartbeat. It sooths. My wife chuckles at my razor sharp teddy bear, but it has to be held to be believed. It's perfect and close to any real magic I have ever seen. I highly suggest you get one if you don't have one yet.:)

Jake
Jake, I just recieved my Salyan, now I understand your post, it is a great, secure feeling Khuk! The cho is different, is there a special meaning to this one?
