I'm sure someone with more experience here than I will get here soon, but here's my two cents. Haven't handled a Balance, but based on it's weight at least I'd say you might want to get another for the more heavy duty work and chopping. Most people start with an AK, WWII or BAS. I did with an 18" AK and it was a very good, solid knife - I'm very happy with it. So I'd say yes, getting a AK or some such would be a good idea.
As an aside, if you're anything like the rest of us you'll end up getting more anyway. I've only got the AK and a Crow, with a Pen and an R5 in the mail. If I had more money at my disposal I'd have 50 by now.
I don't own a 18in balance but I do own a 13in one, and for its size/weight I can say that you should be able to do all around bush and camp. Even in the small size (13in) it still chops very well and can take down a small tree, so I wouldn't worry about a 18in balance having much problem (unless you're after someone really big or you are wanting to split a lot of wood).
