Well, Max, let me start off saying I hate yer guts fer gittin' that shiv instead ovme!
I have made many knives from old files and it requires some smithing competency to perform as the steel crumbles easily once it is brought up very hot. One mis-lick will ruin the blade blank. I was taught by the blacksmith at Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts years ago. My 7 year old Granddaughter was sharp-shooting & correcting him while he was doing a demonstration to a full house. When she started asking him technical questions, he stopped the presentation and asked very loud: "WHO does this little girl belong to?" The place went quiet. Gulp. Finally, I swallowed my pride and said that I did. He replied: "Then I want to meet you because she knows 100% about what she is talking about." The rest is history.
The knife will always be file steel and will work fine being made out of such, but I suggest you don't use it as a pry bar or drop it from very high up onto a concrete surface. It will excel as a personal defense weapon, hold a good edge once you get it sharp, but you probably don't want to do any batoning or heavy duty wood chopping. Hope you like that khukuri. It IS a handsome beastie!
