Deals for 8/23 -- Pix, AK Bowie, Vojpuri Bowie and Great Buys

That farm knife is a sharp looking blade for sure.

A question about the one I got. Is there just a Bonecutter or is a Bonecutter always a Ganga Ram Bonecutter. Still learning about all the different knives and wondering if this is a variation, the original or something else. Makes no difference to me as I'm sure I will love it just wanted a bit more history on it. Thanks

I noticed a blade while reading the forums a few days back that really caught my eye. I believe it was called a jungle knife. It kinda reminded me of a scaled down machete. I was just wondering if that was what was in mind when the knife was created and if there will be more offerings of this blade. Also, does HI ever make a more traditional machete, and if not, would that be a possibility?

LIL, I may be wrong, but I believe the GRS/BC hybrids are some sort of variation. I know very little about both of these individually, so I'll let someone else explain it better. Perhaps the most similar feature these two models share is the broader blade, and thus a less pointy blade shape? Again, hopefully someone more knowledgeable can confirm that.

I don't know much about the jungle knife, but if you're after a traditional machete, the new Parangs seem to fill that niche.

There is The Ganga Ram Special, a khukuri named after an old kami that uncle bill met and helped while in nepal. He could supposedly make a khukuri that never needed sharpening.

The Bonecutter is basically a butchers khukuri modeled after ones that hollowdweller bought from a traveling khukuri salesman named praj. H.I. started making them after praj disappeared.

The current bonecutter/ganga ram you see here now is basically a derivative of both styles mixed together due to the kami's. It was never meant to be. Auntie is presently trying to straighten the mess out and get the styles separated again to what they were originally.

The jungle knife is a fairly recent addition to the lineup. It is meant as a short machete. Another one is the annapurna mountain bowie.

The history of these models and more can be found by using the search function in this forum and in the archives.

Refer to this thread.

The original Bonecutter wasn't made by HI - it was originally offered by GK Khukuris. It was fairly leaf shaped, probably closer to 3/8" thick, and had a massive bevel taking up about 1/3rd of width (thick spine + very acute edge angle = very deep cut = "bonecutter"). When GK Khukuris vanished, HI ended up having a version made by Sgt. Khadka who, for a long time, exclusively made them. It was a little different from the original, but it still had the thick spine and ~1/3rd bevel and an amazing kukri with a lot of fans.

Recently, other kamis have been making bonecutters as well, but these were quite a different beast and ended up being referred to as GRS/BCs due the differences. The main distinction between Sgt. Khadka's version and those by other kamis was that the thin edge created by a bevel taking up 1/3rd of the width was replaced by a more obtuse one that was more around 1/5 or 1/6th the width... a more obtuse bevel will give better for edge retention and help with blowing chunks out of hardwood, but won't be as slicey/deep biting (which as I established earlier, is why it was called the "bonecutter") as the original/Sgt. Khadka

Aunty Yangdu, being the amazing person that she is, took up our suggestions and is going to have some built closer to the originals. I know I'll be picking one up ;)

I'll let you know when I get mine (probably this Thursday or Friday as Aunty has some sort of space warp machine for delivering packages). I'll also probably do a fairly in-depth review of it when I get a chance... it's practically an obligation being the designer of the thing (though an awesome one that I'm really looking forward to). BTW, I think ElSitherino might have snagged this one up (though it never hurts to email Aunty - she might have another tucked away somewhere :)) I'm glad to see my design is getting so much interest though - hopefully Aunty will have a couple more made up!

In other news, this is pretty high up there on the list of things I'm proud of :o

Haha - awesome! Well now I really want you to get one: I'd be honored to know that my design got used for of the most time-honored cutting tasks around  Next on the list - get someone to use one to cut down an X-mas tree, carve a pumpkin, and the ultimate goal: cut their wedding cake :p

Yes. Yes. My devious plan is coming together nicely :D

I like the farm knife but was waiting for a review. I wasn't sure about its intended use. At first I thought it was thinner and geared more as something like a butchers knife. But it is obviously beefier than that. Can't wait to see what its good at and which things are better left to the kukris.

It sure is a looker! I bet if you throw that in a pile of 50 knives and kukris it will get noticed every time.

Well I probably won't be able to do much past give my initial impressions with some pictures at first, but if I do write a review, it will definitely be revisited as I try it out for more and more tasks

I was informed that the farm knife will be in the mail and on the way to me today, I'll be sure to post some pictures when I get it and give a short review of it when I take it out back and test it on a few branches.

Thanks all for the information on the Ganga Ram Bonecutter. Can't wait to give it a try. Good luck to whoever got that farm knife. It looks like a great blade. I might have to pick one of those up sometime. I am also interested in the jungle knife. I can see this is going to be an expensive hobby. ;)
