Many woods, especially oily ones, darken through oxidation, etc., as a result of being exposed to the sun's ultraviolet rays. Two woods that I know for a fact do that are purpleheart and pink ivory. Both start out fairly light, but gradually darken with time.
Might not be the right answer, but could at least be a contributor.
