Policies like that are geared to the least competent people, not the most competent. They should probably hire you.

hello, ive been a huge bm fan for a long time. i notice the warranty is voided if the knife is dissasembled by someone other than benchmade. i comepletly took apart and cleaned and re assembeled a knife with no problems and no missing parts by memory. the customer service team couldnt tighten the bolster and there was a screw on the inside of the knife i found myself and tweaked :)

You over-react. This condition is set for those who disassemble a knife and screw it up because of their own luck of skill or basic understanding of how things work! I do not have any problem with BM voiding their warranty for that case. People should be hold accountable for their own mistakes: that serves them good in the long run!

P.S. Besides a warranty is always a part of the cost of the product: so it is also included in the price everybody pays. So do I want to pay for somebody not knowing what he is doing: probably not. That could be the reason why I do not have any knives with "no question asked" kind of warranty: I do not mind people asking questions, that shows they care!

I modded 3 three benchmade knives, and took them apart. Never had issues with them over warranty being voided, some of them are knife nuts just like us.

It's those torx screws that someone has hammered an allen wrench or a Phillips screw driver into that are a dead give a way.

Or the ones that have slots cut into them for flathead screwdrivers... :)

They never need to see that because they'll send out replacement screws.

The only knife I might send in is my LFK but it's a beater so chances are that I won't.

i was just having fun, im not mad at benchmade i totally understand. theyve warranty serviced a lot of knives ive taken apart and cleaned if they have a worn out liner lock or something.

I could not get the screws out of mine. It was like they were welded in. Ended up sending it to them to replace the blade for me. Was only 30 bucks for a new blade, so I was quite happy. HK nitrous blitz. Also I modded the hell out of the g10 scales which is why I didn't want to send it back. I guess if you are paying they don't care if you have completely destroyed it or made it better.

The warranty on my Chevy Suburban is voided too if I disassemble it and return it to the dealership in a big box because I can't get it back together.

LOL this reminds me when I worked at Suzuki, a customer who brought in a Suzuki SUV on a tow truck because he couldn't get the wheel back on the car. He told us he was driving off the lot, and hit a pothole right outside the dealer a block away (pretty well known pothole if I say so my self) which dented his rim.
So he tried to fix it at home, but couldn't get the wheel back in the car.
Manager tried to get him to pay explaining to him that this not covered under warranty and quite frankly he wouldn't have charged him if he had brought it right back instead of heading home and trying to fix it himself. The customer refused saying it wasn't his fault and that the dealer should repair the road (a public road...). This went on for like 2 hours.

Anyways they waived the repair cost just to get rid of him. They had to do some repairs, and ended up having to replace that rim/tire. Customer left happy, but the manager was a little pissed that day.

Luckily that extra service paid off since he came back a few months later and got another car from them for his wife.

If you know what you're doing, they'd never know you took it apart.

Not true. There are magnifiers used that can see things you wouldn't be able to with the naked eye. A lot of companies use them to check for tampering.

It's certainly a funny thread to start if you understand their concerns. The subject line all by itself sort of sets a tone, don't you think?

the day i posted it (which was for conversation due to boredom)
i had just taken apart my apparation and cleaned it out. i found a screw was lose on the inside that was holding the bolster on which the clip was attached to and was pivoting side to side easily, so i was happy i took it apart, fixed it and got it back together again without any missing parts, which i have many times before on other knives. i just got to thinking about their warranty and was wondering why they specifically say its voided if anyone other than them takes it apart when im not trained at all by them and i was capable of doing the same thing.

i posted the subject line as is because of my sarcastic nature, and with my first words being im a benchmade fan, and ending it with a smiley face, also note that i was not intending to troll or yell or anything. by the way ive has a fever for three days so i cant say my mind is functioning on the highest amount of possible rational finctionality. no one is obligated to read this or like it. and my personal experience with benchmade has always been positive, i have not had them deny me service on any of my products ive purchased

What you're missing is the fact that this thread will live on forever, and people will skim the subject line and draw the conclusion that the knives are junk. Your post sure seems like a funny way of expressing your appreciation of the knives and the company.

A mechanic with the proper tools and knowledge of tamperproof procedures would get past most service departments, I have.

Not to say most people could do it but I've been fixing things for 40 years ago I know what to look for and how to either defeat or restore almost any tamper indicators.

BTW, if anyone from Benchmade reads this, I've never taken a Benchmade knife apart. ;)

Benchmade doesn't take knives coming in to look for tampering, that would be a waste of time and money.

um sorry but im very frustrated at my attempts to understand this. how, in any way, would my subject line "dear benchmade (ok so what, i mention the brand) your customers arent all idiots" (where are the knives mentiond and their quality? the whole point of this thread was to mention not everybody breaks a knife they take apart) make a passerby assume that the company and they product is junk? please go troll elsewhere with intelligent comments that make sense.

Well, I've known a few idiots in my time, but none of them were Benchmade fans. Mr. Newell has a track record and isn't known for trolling, and your post was not a problem. As a spot of advice; when we buy a knife or a pack of rubber bands for that matter, once we own them they're our property to do what we will. But even sent up to Oregon City in pieces, Benchmade has a very generous repair policy that is very hard to beat...and many of us have sent in "problems we caused" and had their product returned no questions asked in perfect working order, parts and all. If there Is a questionable repair order the cost is cheap compared to tossing the thing in the trash and then replacing it. That's like burning money.

I would ask that this post be closed so it DOESN'T live on forever please.
