Dear Spyderco Exec's.........new knife idea?

I can assure you JD is territorial over their green. My company, a freight carrier, damaged a pallet of their paint and they personally came and took the undamaged but covered in paint pails for their own destruction.

We painted something orange and white once and called colour creamsicle. Wound up with a talking too from the Popsicle folks. Didn't have to change it though.

Any signature/namesake colour or wording can draw negative attention.

Honestly, I think any color will have positive/negative comments about how it does/doesn't blend in nature. Heck, it took me 5 minutes in a freshly cut hay field to find a sledge hammer with a bright neon orange handle one day, and i knew within 20 ft of where we used it 5 minutes before!

I've looked thru Spyderco's 2016 catalog... I didn't see much in the green we are talking about. Plus, I figure if Spyderco can make *ahem* Dark Blue (Burple) G-10 scales....(Love mine). How hard can making the same scales in bright green? No, the green knives in the pic above someone posted is not even close to "Green"; it's more like grey imo.

If you sprint run it with JD... expect the costs to double or triple fyi. It's a knife, it has nothing to do with JD. JD Green is a specific paint code. We're talking about a naturally occurring color in nature.. no need to jump thru them hoops. I personally live 50 miles from Moline, IL. where JD headquarters is fyi. We have a few Farmers around here! :D

BTW... Please trust me when I tell you this needs to be "made in USA"; Farmers are very superstitious about made anywhere else. Just being honest.

I still think a translucent bright green, or amber knive(s) sprint run would be killer?! ;)

They may not be the green you are after but they are in fact green. I call them green, Spyderco calls them green and everyone else calls them green.

Maybe make it amber colored translucence and call it PM2 "Golden" after Golden, CO ?

why not make it bone like a real farmer would carry. I grew up on a farm and yes we had many john deere's.

I would say that Spyderco already has a few knife designs that you could use down on the farm.

Disclaimer: I'm not a farmer. I don't speak for farmers. I have accidentally killed mint plants... twice. You don't want me anywhere near things that grow.

With that out of the way, the few farmers I have known, have been ultimately practical folks, almost to a fault. The types who "accessorize" where the color of the hat has to match the color of the shoes are IME, much more urban types. I can't possibly imagine any of the farm folk I know jumping on a green knife just because its the same color as his tractor. I COULD see a farmer going for an orange, or yellow (like Salt series) color for easy visibility which actually could make a difference to function (easy to spot and harder to lose). In the case of those bright non-natural colors, they could actually enhance the usability of the knife and provide a measurable practical advantage.

But making it green so that the knife color matches a John Deere tractor? Something tells me the only people that would sell to are the wannabe-rednecks. You know, the type who drive the jacked up F150 with confederate flag sticker in the back window who park in front of Starbucks.

Again, I refer you to my original disclaimer. If farmers are more likely to accessorize than I think, I am willing to stand corrected.

I think I should point our that making custom colors in G-10 is a real commitment. Very large quantities are required after the initial development. We did a special run of foliage green for the military some years back and it took quite a while to use the inventory. We just finished our midnight blue G-10, which some people call 'blurple" and we have quite a bit made. We'll be using it on many knives in the future. It's our 110V color.

It's far easier to make FRN knives special colors because it's just the dye color that we're dealing with.

Sal, I'm by no means an expert on knives made in Golden but I feel at this present time this one is probably the best knife you make :)

Thanks again

Sidebar; so reading into that. The natural G10 PM2s for Blade HQ should be a pretty sizeable run?

I'd happily support a knife line that contributed proceeds to a farming fund of some sort...

But not so much one that was a so called collaboration with a tractor company and had logos and colors...

I'd think Spyderedge would be ideal. Maybe a reverse-S. Like a Myrtle type design, but in FRN.

Wow, you went big right out of the gate! The PM2 is an amazing knife and one of my all time favorite Spydercos. Like I said, you started off with a real winner but don't let that keep you away from some of the iconic frn offerings. Knives like the Delica, Stretch, Endura and the knives of the "Salt" series are some of the best products and the most refined designs that Spyderco offers in my opinion. They are a bit less "fancy" than some of the higher priced offerings but there is a reason they are loved by so many Spyderco fans. I went through (and still own) a LOT of the high end knives that Spyderco makes before I finally purchased a Delica and a Stretch but now those two are the ones that make it into my pocket more than any others. I like them all...I'm just saying, try not to overlook those knives for as long as I did. :)

Just to pile on :)
I love the PM2 and Military. If those were the only knives I had, I'd have my needs covered (chopping is for axes ;) ).
Having said that, if I just want an EASY to carry and HIGHLY EFFECTIVE cutting tool that is easy to maintain and relatively easy to replace if I lose it, I have NO problem just grabbing a Delica (I have several) or an Endura (if I wanted a longer blade, which I often find useful). Awesome cutting tools. Espec. in HAP40 (except that easy to replac part) :)

Trust me.. I've got a few other knives :P

PM2 in Burple (my 1st/only Spyderco so far)
Keshaw Orange Ken Onion
Sog Trident Mini Tanto (won of FB) :)
Sog Twitch II
a cheap Barlow.. Free with code when i ordered
CRKT Hunt'n Fisch
Buck Vanguard
9" Old Timer 2 blade
Camillus Titanium flipper
Countless kitchen knives
3x Rapala fillet knives in different sizes... etc.

My Family aka Bro's n Mom say I have a knife fascination... I dare them to come on this forum! Lol

My beater knife that i normally use the most is normally the Sog Trident Mini Tanto... I've used that thing for about 4 years on everything/anywhere including the farm, and building my Brothers 60ft x100ft building! Pretty easy to sharpen back to razor, and polymer handle I don't have to worry about marking up. Besides, it was a freebie! :) I've been using/wearing the PM2 trying to break it in. So far I love this S110V steel!

New knife idea: Spyderco Onion... yeah you can all guess what this knife looks like. :D

Seriously... do a collaboration with Ken Onion... it might be fun. ;)

I could see my dad using a dyad. He never carried a single blade knife unless he was hunting and that was an old western.
