Dearly Departed Knives

I'm curious, let's see if I can remember all the knives and tools I've sold. The only ones I was really sad to see go was the first Manix I had and the Dodos.

Looking at it now I think I've been pretty happy with most of my purchases, not a lot of junk.

There are others I miss, but every one of these I wish I had back. I sold them due to money problems that came with 3 surgeries ( so far).

These were indeed favorites, but I believe overall there are better knives being made now than at any other time in history. This is a true golden age of knives. Better tech, more selection in steel, more innovation amongst production companies like Spyderco, Kershaw, Buck, Falkniven, Bark River, etc, etc., not to mention some truly astounding work in the custom market. There is even a better selection of quality traditional slip joints now.

Very True. The good thing about right now is that if you sell or trade a knife you love there is a fair chance that there will be something better come along (be it a new design or an updated sprint of a classic model)

Recently I have been trying to thin the herd down to knives that I truly love. As I near my goal I found some time for retrospection. As I was looking through my list of knives I realized that I have moved mucho steel in the short time I have been at this. I still own lots of knives so this list should be taken as a grouping of knives that I either: owned way too many of, had no use for, didn't make the grade for some reason or another (I'm pretty picky), or served as trade fodder knowing that I could easily secure another at a later date. I have put a star by the ones I regret selling or trading..... you will notice that there are not very many stars ;).

Feel free to share your lists or just opine on the state of being a knife junky and feelings about buying/selling/trading in general.

You got the Blade-Tech Rijbak from me for a Spyderco Citadel and even though I collect Spyderco, I always sorta wished I'd kept the Rijbak.
It was a heck of a well built knife wasn't it? I bought that when they first came out for 167.00.

hmmm... seems like all or most of these knives listed are tactical type knives. no traditional. kinda tells me something. :D

I remember that now..... how it the Citadel holding up. IIRC you collection has grown considerably since then ;)

I've kept at least one of every knife I have ever purchased.
Knives I could only get one of will never leave me. :)

My casket might weigh 2000lbs but that's what friends are for isn't it?
Carry your ass and loot to the hole.

I thin out the knives from time to time. Recently, I sold off my big folder, with the exception of 2 big folders. Every now and then, I like to adjust the collection.

I have also sold of some knives, because I need the money.

The knives that I sold off hand are:
3 Terzuola's
RJ Martin Q-36
2 Mike Alsdorf's.

I know what you mean. I sold off about $10k of knives last year to fund a trip to Thailand with my wife. When I look back, there are very few knives I regret selling. The way I look at it is that knives are just "things," whereas the trip was an investment in my relationship with my wife.

Hmm, the sad part about looking at spiral's list is that many of them, I also had (& many of those, from him).

Since I keep a notebook of all of my trades & everything, I could probably list everything, but why? I'd just get depressed seeing all that I've had & then probably would try to figure out how much I've spent...& then it goes down hill from there.

Here's what I can think of that I regret getting rid of:

Bauchomp Shaman
Blade-Tech Rijbak
Hastings Sand Shark II
Montell Trapper: Pre-ban ivory, Ti bolsters, & filework.
ScrapYark MUK LE

Fortunately, there aren't many that I regret getting rid of.
