Deassisted Barrage

I just bit the bullet and deassisted my 581 barrage. I've gotta say, it's not quite sebenza smooth, but it's smoother than my other benchmades and it certainly doesn't need to be assisted. It still flies out with authority and the axis detent is stiffer than a lot of my other axis knives, which is pleasant. Overall it was a much better experience (and less complicated) than I expected. How many of you have deassisted your assisted knives? What did you deassist and how did it turn out?

I too de-assisted my 581. About 9 months ago. I work in a kitchen and was having a hard time closing it one handed. I really loved how the AO sounded and the authority with which it opened, but I really didn't like using my leg to close the blade. So I bit the bullet, took out the spring, and I loved it even more! Smooth as hell, and still opens with authority. Granted I still kinda miss the "Thwack" from the AO, but nowhere near enough to go back.

I have also de-assisted both my 581 and 586, and I like them quite a bit more in that configuration.

Interesting... I just pulled the safety slider out of my 585 tonight and I like that change quite a bit. Hadn't thought about removing the assist spring though. I probably won't do it since I close mine one handed just fine, but you got me curious. How is the action at the near-closed position? I assume it's not just slack...

My 581 feels just like any other normal knife. Axis Lock holds the blade secure when closed and open. The 586 does feel very slightly loose when closed (can wiggle the blade side-to-side), but the Axis Lock still holds it securely closed. When opened, lockup is solid (no blade play).

As for the near-closed position, it's like any other Axis Lock knife. Once the lock bar gets past the rounded part of the blade tang and into that little choil area, it pulls the blade closed.

I've never tried another axis lock, don't know how that feels. Guess I'll have to either just try it with the spring out or maybe I'll go ahead and pick up that Griptillian I've had my eye on!

My mini is de-assisted and de-safetied (new word for y'all).

Made it a much better knife, IMO.

agreed Armadew, I pulled the safety out of mine too and it changed the feel for the better.

As for the sensation in the near closed position, mine (as all of them should) kept that sensation of the blade being pulled closed in the near closed position. It's a function of the shape of the blade tang.

I deassisted my ZT 770cfM4 and it works fine. I can now open my ZT as I wish, which is a big help since about 1/3 of my day is spent among cubicles...

It took a little fiddling with the pivot screw, and I had to leave the small metal liner in place so the washer doesn't ride on straight CF. Without the liner it is rather gritty and rough feeling. But with it in place, and some tinkering, it is similar feeling to my DPx, or my two BMs. I thankfully didn't have the issue of Many others that own the CF models (a rather weak detent).

Much better that way; especially the 586...

I have a 586-1401 and deassissted it, got bored, re-assisted it, and there it sits.. it is real easy to deassist but it was kind of a b¡+©# to put the spring back in.. definitely take the thumbstuds off, which makes it a lot easier!

Yes, and yes to both of those points LOL! ;):D

I found a great youtube video tutorial on how to "clock" the spring so it's oriented properly but have had no success in getting it right...
