Debating on a BK-16 as a gift

Well, my plans to purchase it got delayed, but I ended up picking it up for my uncle for Christmas this year. Beautiful knife, completely different than my BK-10. I was actually expecting it to be larger than it is. He has gotten into off road exploring with a Quad (is that what they're called?). I'm just hoping I shouldn't have bought him a BK-10 like I have as it's a beast of a knife, but I think he would be more apt to carry the smaller BK-16. I'm not sure if I would qualify the BK-16 as a "survival knife", but it should is an upgrade of what he's currently carrying - which is nothing.

I'll say your plans got delayed. Better late than pregnant, tho. The 16 sure as hell qualifies as a survival knife, IMO - stout, more agile than the 10 and easy enough to carry (and modify). Granted, you're not going to do a lot of wood processing - but you're not gonna do that with the 10, either - it's a little too short and the clip beats the hell outta batons. I like the 10, but the "Sweet 16" hits the sweet spot for an EDC/woods bumming knife. Your uncle better love it....especially since it is a very well considered gift - and he's knifeless at this point. I like that you have thought of what he might be more apt to carry instead of what you think he should carry. I'd bet the first time he uses it, he'll have a smile on his face and thankfulness in his heart. Good on ya.

The BK-16 will almost certainly take a keener edge than S30V (due to finer grain of the steel), and it will be tougher if the geometry is the same (it won't be). But the S30V will likely hold its edge longer. Both are good steels.

BK 16 makes a great gift. So do all the rest! A nice cheap sheath upgrade is the short brown leather sheath (1251S) from Ka-Bar. Fits all the tweeners and only cost $10-15.

The Bk16 is a great all-around outdoors blade. I use mine for camping, hiking, backpacking, etc. The 1095 is a great steel for that purpose, as the ease of sharpening allows you to keep it shaving sharp, even when you don't necessarily have the best sharpeners handy.

Thanks for the tip on the sheath!

16 and 17 have somewhat shorter blades than that. Any idea if the $6 1233S sheath from the Skinner might work for those?

Oh, nevermind.
I'll find out myself! Just ordered one.
