Anyone have some leads to a decent airbrush for gun-koting? I've purchased a couple of the cheap ones from HF, but they keep crapping out on me, so I guess I'll have to pony up for a decent one. :o

that is definitely a price difference. :D (I think mine cost 19 bucks. ;))

I use a Badger double action for airbrush work on my bikes. I believe the Paasche and Badger are just about the same.

Couple more questions -- anyone have an Aztek, and what are you all's cleaning methods after use?

My father ran a business out of our home basement for years. He worked for a machine shop, and also was the outsource for the shop to stencil part numbers onto stamped metal parts. His cleaning method, which you can adapt any way you see fit, was to completely disassemble the airbrush and drop the small parts into a shotglass full of thinner. He then cleaned them up with an acid brush and compressed air and reassembled the gun. He did this daily for years on end. Oh, and this is how I do mine too. :D

yup -- that is my method too. Just making sure it wasn't lack of proper cleaning that was causing my craptastic HF airbrush to die on me.

You can clean the air brush all you want but if you forget the little vent hole on the jar lid it still wont spray! Took me a half hour to figure that out........John

checked that too -- I spent about 2 hours trying to fix a 20-dollar tool. :grumpy: :D

I take my airbrush apart and leave it in a jar of lacquer thinner. I don't put the valve in the jar because it has a Oring seal and it could over constant soaking make it swell.
The Aztek my friend has one and loves it and does outstanding work with it. I have never used it.

Unless you are painting fine detail (like auto or motorcycle graphics), you don't need a double action air brush. You also don't need an internal mix airbrush. You need a simple external mix single action air brush The Paasche H model would serve you quite well. I am assuming you are coating in single color or camoflage type paterns? If so double action is over kill. There is far less cleaning with an external mix air brush. You never have to take the gun portion apart, Just the color cup and siphon assembly, there are no fiddly little parts to lose.(just losen an allen set screw and the whole color cup siphon assembly slips out. The siphon assembly is just two pieces you clean with solvent and a pipe cleaner.

Look for a Paasche model H #3 or H #5 They have an adjustable spray patern from about 1/16" wide to 1" wide.
If you have a Michaels craft store in your area check for their sunday circular in your local paper. They usually have a 40% off coupon. Their prices are a little higher but with the 40% off you should get it for around $30 - $35.
