Decent, cheap pen?

What's a good quality pen for everyday use for less than, say, $5?

I've heard the Pilot G2 is a good one...I'm looking for something that writes smoothly, but doesn't smear easily...

I like the G2 also, in 0.7mm. I really like gel ink pens, but many of them (like some of the Pentels) take forever to dry, and I always end up smearing the ink. The ink used in the G2 is about the fastest drying that I've found. My office just started ordering the Uni-Ball Signo, that one seems pretty good too.

True.

Could go with a ballpoint.
They write a heckuva lot better than they used to.
New inks, new technology. Smoother, faster, less blobbing.

Anyway - With the Pilot or Uni-Ball, you have the retractable kind and the kind with a cap. I personally like the kind with a cap better. (Because: once I forgot to retract a gel point pen and the ink bled out onto my shirt pocket. Stain would NOT come out. Since then, retractables are out except if they use water soluble ink, or if they are a ballpoint.)

i don't understand why everyone hates on the standard, bic med point pen. i think those are great in every respect.

Yeah, I hear you. I don't like to carry retractable pens either, that's why I normally carry a fountain pen or something else with a cap when I'm at work. The Uni-Ball Signo that we have at work has a cap, that's what I carry most of the time. I like the Pilot, but I mostly use that at home, or in the holder of my notepad.

I like the ones at the bank, 'cept for the dang chains, they make 'em so hard to get, still they're free, or if your the honest sort try a Zebra pen they're pretty good and usually cost at most $3 a piece.

I also like the Uni-Ball with cap. Great pen under 5 bucks!

I think people have become a little spoiled by the smoother writing gel ink pens.

Its a little more than 5.00 but a Rotring 600 can be had for 10.00 to 15.00 and Parker gell refills fir it.

if refillability isn't a big issue
i use the pilot g-tec-c4 exclusively
0.4mm, smooth and dries quickly

Uni-ball Deluxe Rollerball is my favorite disposable. Writes pretty smooth, dries fast, more-or-less permanent ink, and it's about $1.60.

Parker makes a good click type ballpoint for 3 to 4 bucks. Available at Wal-Mart.
