Decent folder as a gift

So a friend of mine has a birthday coming up, and has expressed the desire for a decent folder for edc.

I'm looking for something not overly huge, maybe a 3.5 inch blade max, and can be used regularly.
Budget is around $50

I was looking at the Cold Steel AK-47, Rajah III, and Recon, but then I saw some interesting Bokers for just over $20 and made with 440C. My only concern with them is the liner lock, as I have no experience with the quality of their liner locks.

Am I looking in the right direction, or should I think about some other options?

Thanks for your help!

I'm liking the Blur and the Rat 1
I have a friend with a very old Delica, and it was great, I didn't realize that you could get them for $50!

Thanks for the suggestions!

Delicas are awesome for $50
Blur isn't a bad idea...about $50
Buck Vantage Avid... about $30
Buck Nobleman (My favorite $25 framelock)
Several good Case folders under $50
Love CS fixed blades, but not a big fan of their folders.

The Boker Plus line is pretty good especially for the price, imo. No issues with their liner-locks or 440C as far as I know. Hope this helps...

i just got the ontario rat 1 - there are new colors available if you search around. its a very nice folder. for the price range i would also suggest the kershaw jyd from kershawguy.

I would say go with the blur, skyline or leek. the blur is amazing, and really fun, the skyline is just a very nice little knife, and the leek is the funnest thing ever. if you get a blem, which is basically the scratch and dents of the knife world, then you can get a leek for 25 bucks. shoot, get 2, let him pick and keep the other one. here is the link.

Not if I get some first!
;)

Thanks for the link though, most likely going to get something for him (and quite possibly myself)

As of right now, no, but I have some experience with sharpening, and have various whet stones, strops, and green and white compound

If he needs, help, he just needs to ask me

And btw, just sent PayPal to kershawguy for a leek!

Another vote for the Buck Vantage. Or, one of the more classic knives in the Buck line (110) if he would like a sheath knife or a 3xx if he would like a pocket knife (no clip and smaller). A classic true pocket knife (no clip) is a great gift in my mind. You can get a stag Companion direct from Buck now for $50 w/free shipping. Buck factory often has web sales that are often really good. Worth a look at least.

I will keep that in mind for another gift
Thanks for all the help, really glad I asked before closing in on a deal

Ok, or I would have suggested getting him a $20-$30 knife and a $20-$30 sharpening system.

Is the leek for your friend? Regular blade or composite?

Other options are (to name a few):

Spyderco tenacious, delica or endura
Buck vantage (all three versions are good).
Kershaw blur, leek, skyline
Kabar dozier folders

The Kershaw Whirlwind has not been mentioned, but that would have been my choice. You can get them from ebay less than $50. US Made. When I carry such a knife it is usually a Kershaw OSO Sweet.

The leek is indeed for my friend, and hopefully kershawguy has a few composites left, as I asked for one
If not, I think I'll get him a regular leek or something similar

Is the 440A blade on the whirlwind decent enough for edc and possibly some slight abuse?

I just had great success with the same "problem" -- wanted to buy a close friend (who's knowledgeable and picky about knives) his first Damascus blade and not pay the earth.

I went with the Kershaw Skyline w/ the Damascus blade. Model KS1760DAM.
He just got the knife yesterday and is totally thrilled with it.
I know Kershaw makes great knives, as I've handled many and own that Skyline and a Blur; but I was very gratified that my friend, who is extremely picky about his knives -- he is a retired professional gunsmith, and wants nothing but quality in a weapon or tool -- called me last night to thank me for the "best knife he's ever had." (He favors $100+ Benchmades, generally, now that he's sold off his forge and can't make his own.)
So I submit a plug for the Kershaw Skyline w/ Damascus blade. Lovely EDC at the right price.

The Kabar Phat Bob is really cool. I recently got one online for 53 shipped.
Cool so far, good steel, good lock, great company.
I like it cause of the stubby, non tactical look toit. Really is "Tool-like"
Does not look like a stabby weapon.
