Normally, I'm not at all a fan of kits that are pre-assembled. This includes first aid kits. You can usually find them cheaper piece-meal, but this one is pretty sensible and includes quality components-

Makes me wish I didn't already have most of that stuff so I'd have an excuse to pick it up. :D

I think its a cool idea, but I am pretty sure you can get the individual items cheaper than $70.00

I'd buy the pot and pick up the rest elsewhere. Ben's is a great place though, I have bought stuff from him in the past. Thanks Spooky!

I agree that you could likely find the components cheaper piece by piece, but for a neophyte who doesn't know where to start, this ain't too shabby!

In more recent times(thanks to Doug Ritter, and others),companies are starting to make pre-packaged PSKs/FAKs with DECENT PARTS/COMPONENTS!!!;)

The wussies parts are going bye-bye!!

I like that pot. Looks like a nice entry level kit for those who dont know where to start. I think it could be had cheaper though.

i agree with the comments...

looks like a good place for someone who comes on the board and is asking things like where should i start-i want to be prepared when i go into the woods. this is a good starting point instead of sending them to a thousand different sites with a long shopping list of often vague things like "you need to cover fire and water and..."

i also like that this kit is less of a survival kit as it is a good place to start for general camping. none of the things are packed into a tiny container so tight that a person would be afraid to never be able to get them back in if they took them out to check them out. this kit encourages practice with your gear.

Actually, I'm adding up the components, and if you wanted to stick to those exact pieces, you're actually saving a little bit of money. To my mind, prices are roughly:

Pot: $25
Paracord: $5
Mora: $10
Firesteel: $15
Compass: $15
Fresnel lens: $5
Total: ~$75

The fresnel lense is about the only thing I'd have left out willfully, the rest are quality and pretty inexpensive pieces of kit. Most of us obviously have some approximation of these things lying around, but for the newbie this is quite a fair assembly.

Good point Spooky, You could probably find deals on a couple of those exact items, but probably only save a couple of dollars. Which would still put you at Bens price, so all in all I'd say good buy.

Man, that's a great kit.
Finally a kit that has a real friggin' knife in it!
The pot looks like a lifer, too.

Another thing to remember when adding up components, is the cost of shipping each one seperately, versus the one kit.

Good kit but I would trade the fresnel lense for a tarp or pancho even a emergency blanket.

Yep, the pot would be something I'd pick up from Ben. Have been buying from him on ebay for a few years now. He's good people and offers good service.
