Decent Tanto

Hi All. Have always liked the tanto fixed blade and still miss the early Cold Steel (copy I think) that I gave a buddy who went to the 1st Gulf War. I want a decent quality tanto - not exhibition grade, doesn't have to be forged, hamon not necessary. Will be used for range of work outdoors, maybe even as a camp knife. Cold Steel recon tanto in carbon V looks good value and the CS tantos also seem pretty good (not sure about worth of San Mai - thoughts?)
BUT, I would really like something a bit higher quality, something a bit more special. Budget maybe upto $300. What would you recommend? I will be in the US in 10 days time so will be buying while there. Thanks a lot.

Strider DB and DBL are good tantos, and they are well within your pricerange. BTW for 300 bucks you can order a very nice custom.

As your checking the others out. Look into a SOG Titanium Vision - Great Tanto - rock solid -

for what you want to do with it I think the recon tanto would be good choice. and I think there is one on the trade board right now. I no some people hammer cs but i've never had a bad one and i've had several. ahgar

I think Big Bird is talking about a fixed blade.

Stop scrwewing around and get on the list for a Mike Snody Narita Tanto

I waited what seemed like forever for mine but now that I have it and use it on a regualr basis I think it was worth the wait and cost.

I also have a Mike Snody Kozuka that has given heroic performace over the last 9 years and it looks like it has been through a war.

Tempting, tempting!!! Snody's knives are oustanding but how do you bring yourself to actually USE a knife like that (especially of that design)? I mean, a custom camp/bushcraft knife might also look really nice but mentally I can tune in to using it for what is has been designed.

Hey Redguy - nice idea. They are quite similar to the Bob Lum Spyderco fixed blade tanto; I have one of those and while it is nice to handle and pretty well made, the grip shape is a bit limiting.

Birchtree - thanks, what a great link. Not seen DM knives before and they look great - a definite 'maybe'

Big Bird,

Chase Axinn is a real gentleman and a very talented knifemaker. I'm sure he will make a knife for you according to your specs.

I just ordered a custom tanto in A2 from Justin at rangerknives.com Very reasonably priced, cheaper than a strider and he'll do anything you want in any steel!

Check out Ivan Campos (sorry, don't have his website to hand). He is now doing some traditional tantos in high carbon steels. Ivan is in Brazil but sells internationally.

Big Bird,
Shall I assume that you non-responce to my email and pictures means that you are not interested?

Regards,
Ciao
