Decent Tanto

Had some trouble opening the Burchtree website earlier today but works now and WOW what a beautiful collection. Michael your knives look great - like the blending of traditional and modern ideas too. Truly expert craftsmanship. I don't suppose you have any ready for sale do you?

Bark River makes a beautiful tanto with various handle materials available. The one below is made with stabilized amboynia burl. (And a great buy @ only $119.96) Their customer service is second to none.

I was checking out the Sunrise River website mentioned above and noticed that a lot of their knives look suspiciously like they have pre-made blades from places like Texas Knifemakers supply and Koval Knife Supply. The folder they are selling with their logo etched on it is definitely a Darryl Ralph kit knife from knifekits.com. (GPC-1000 kit) Now there is nothing wrong with using pre-made blades and kits to make a knife as long as people know what they're getting. However, it seems a bit dishonest to mislead people into thinking they're getting a hand made knife, when in fact, they are getting a pre-made blade with handmade scales.. Just my 2 cents, others may not agree.

Thanks Big Bird -- I don't have anything available at the time. :)

Tempting, tempting!!! Snody's knives are oustanding but how do you bring yourself to actually USE a knife like that (especially of that design)? I mean, a custom camp/bushcraft knife might also look really nice but mentally I can tune in to using it for what is has been designed.

I bought one of his Kozuka knives and a relative was in my office while I was abroad and needed a knife so he grabbed it and proceeded to open boxes with it including gumming it up with tape and scratching it while dragging it across staples.

When I came back and saw it I was furious but since it already screwed up I started using it as a utility knife and HOT DAMN that sucker was so sharp and held an edge so well that I felt like an idiot for not using it long before then.

I have since bought 2 more of his Tanto knives and they are absolutely the toughest, sharpest and most well thought out knives I have ever owned.

I have done everything from cooking and butchering animals to whittling to prying open an ice coated stall door in the middle to cutting bound up load straps on my flatbed semi trailer with these knives and they are without match in my opinion and are a tool for life.

Thansk Sopmodm4. I actually went and bought a Wally Hayes forged tanto - it is really nice and I was the luckiest man in the world to e mail him and have a knife in my hands inside 5 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mike tells me his waiting list is 2 years.

Hi All. Have always liked the tanto fixed blade and still miss the early Cold Steel (copy I think) that I gave a buddy who went to the 1st Gulf War. I want a decent quality tanto - not exhibition grade, doesn't have to be forged, hamon not necessary. Will be used for range of work outdoors, maybe even as a camp knife. Cold Steel recon tanto in carbon V looks good value and the CS tantos also seem pretty good (not sure about worth of San Mai - thoughts?)
BUT, I would really like something a bit higher quality, something a bit more special. Budget maybe upto $300. What would you recommend? I will be in the US in 10 days time so will be buying while there. Thanks a lot.
If you are visiting you can email Hankins ( Blinker) and see if he has my ( Doug) Tanto ready.
Refer him to this post if you like it and want it.
I can wait for him to do another.
It's the TANTO of Tanto's...
