Decided on a Strider, but need some clarification...

Hey All,
Decided to start putting money aside for a Strider, probably a DGG SNG. I just love the design. However, I'm not inherently a fan of the overbuilt thing and do like using my knives for actual cutting and slicing. I know that, given that statement, it might seem crazy for me to want an SNG but honestly I just do  . So, in light of this decision, I have some clarifying questions.

1: Was thinking I would also get a Diamond Lansky system and re-profile the edge to something more effective at cutting. Has anyone done this, or could anyone say yay or nay in terms of general effectiveness? Or maybe just some general tips? I've never re-profiled a knife but I feel confident that I could, given that I had a guided system and the diamond set.

2: I understand that in the past there have been problems with lock wear, lock rock and blade play. I'm somewhat of the understanding that things have gotten better with regard to these things. Is that true? I'm totally comfortable asking a dealer to check the knife before shipment and I've heard great things about their warranty service so I'm not super concerned but thought I'd ask anyway.

I know that Strider conversations can get heated and be very divisive, so let's just go into it knowing that I'm educated on the discussion and that I've done my research and have already (mostly) made up my mind.

Thanks everyone!

Get a full flat grind. Either way, one can get any knife razor sharp.
dunt worry about the lock-bar. You will be GTG.
Your Strider is built the way it is, on purpose. Try to leave it the way it is.

Its a great jack of all trades knife if you get the full flat grind.

Striders are excellent knives, and my all time favourite knife.
They're good at everything, ergo's are wonderful for all grips, and they are very low maintenance.

My suggestion to you would be to reprofile the edge to 18DPS on an FFG grind.
I had that setup on an SMF and it cut/sliced very well.

As far as lock-up goes, I have never had an issue with lock rock and I have owned my share of Striders.
My personal suggestion is that you stick with the LEGO model, and make sure you get a good clear pick of the lock-up and tang cut out.
It's not hard to see the difference between old geometry and new.

Most importantly, if you are buying used, ask the important questions.....

Personally I reprofile SnG's to 20DPS because it is thinner blade stock than the SMF is, I normally run the 18 DPS on the SMF since the blade stock is thicker. With the 20DPS on an SnG it can whittle hair if you know what you are doing.

I have a Lego and SNG CC, really like them. The FFG cuts decent enough, middle of the road and not too thick. About as heavy as I will go for EDC regarding weight. Like JR88FAN mentioned, check before you buy. I only had 1 or 2 issues with quality (bought used), blade play and lockup IIRC. But finally found two LNIB that are perfect. The highlights are the ergos, I love how it feels in the hand. Go for it!

If you haven't yet re-profiled a knife, I wouldn't start with a Strider. Try a less expensive knife with softer steel first.

As has been said here already go with FFG and reprofiling isnt really a big deal but practice on a throwaway first.

In terms of re profiling, if you feel it's a bit beyond your skill level, you can send it to the guy in my sig. line, or any number of guys on this forum that will give you a perfect 18DPS for not much $....

Just from my experience CPM-154 is the way to go on a Strider, unless you are looking for something more rare. I would then suggest 3V/CruWear/PD-1

Absolutely one of my favorite knives. I have 3 SMF's and 3 SnG's. They absolutely rock IMHO. I'm actually a fan of the 3/4 grind as well....now. I didn't like them at first, but the semi hollow grind on the 3/4 is able to get nasty sharp too. I'm a huge fan of the SnG at 18 dps. They aren't nearly as "overbuilt" as many knives out there. They actually slice quite well. Feel free to PM me with any questions, or if I can help.

I reprofiled the edge of an SnG. I am not good at reprofiling... It wasn't too horribly bad, but when i ended up selling it, it hurt the resale a lot. I was considering just holding on to it and getting a regrind to really make it slice well.
I would still like to get another and get that done, and I love the simplicity of the SnG, and the handle shape is pretty cool, but they didn't come as slicey as I ended up wanting in the end.

I've never had any issues with any of the Striders I own, not to say the issues don't exist. I've got both FFG and 3/4 grind blades. I like the FFG slightly better for slicing. The 3/4 grind will slice ok, but for me, it's a better work knife.

Nothing wrong with using a diamond Lansky, might even have one myself. Here's the only drawback to a Lansky IMO, you have only four options to chose from, 17,20,25,30. The reason I say this is because once you take steel off, it can't be put back on.

I've also got a KME which goes from 17 to 30 in one degree increments. What I've done with the KME is to find the factory edge using a sharpie, then one degree and a time, slowly re profile until you find the best angle for you. That way, you may not want/need to go to 17 dps, you may wind up at 20 or 22 and be perfectly happy with it.

I hope you will enjoy your Strider as much as I enjoy mine and it will serve you well.
