Decided to start saving for a Busse.

So for a couple weeks now I'd been looking around at fixed blades, mostly ESEE's and the like. Then I remembered Busse knives and the great things I had heard about them. What finally sold me was some pics in another thread where someone had hammered their TGLB into their paved driveway.

What I'm wondering though, is which Busse is the one to get? I'm planning on ordering one from the Busse Combat website so I can get it just how I like it, but what model is recommended for a first? I had been looking at the TGLB and SOB, so as you can see I plan on getting a somewhat larger blade. This won't be happening right away, probably sometime in a few months or so will be when I order.

Lastly, does anyone know what kind of coating Busse uses on their blades? And what is the best person/place to buy a sheath from? I had been looking at David Browns sheaths.

Welcome, wannabee piglet! :D

What do you plan on doing with the knife? What tasks? That will help us guide you on the choice.

The coating is a heat cured powder coating. There are many fine sheathmakers for the Bussekin community, start with 'leather vs Kydex'?

Both of those blades are great choices, guess it boils down to what you plan to use it for ? I truly love the SOB that being said the TGLB is also a favorite. The SOB would get the nod for me because of its size and design. It makes for a great pack knife, can be worn on belt pretty comfy and works well for hunting. The SOB currently only comes in satin finish.
The TGLB is a great camp knife and for a knife its size is nice to carry due to LB treatment. I don't know what Busse Combat uses for a coating maybe a powder coat type ? It's pretty tough, some colors are smoother in texture then others.
There's a ton of info in this forum, if you use the search option I'm sure you'll find a lot more cool stuff and info. Try searching the sheath makers on BF there is a lot of great makers. You can't go wrong with a Buy Brown sheath, I have a couple of his and I'm very happy with them. I also have sheaths by Chuddy Bear and Mikey Motto in leather both excellent. Good luck with your decisions and keep us posted on what you decide :)

I'd start with an SOB personally, just a great all around size that's still small enough to get carried.

I'd also recommend getting an Anniversary Straight Handle Battle Mistress, great knife for the money.

You can't go wrong with Buy Brown Sheaths for kydex, I've used a number of them and all have been high quality.

It will likely be used as a camp knife/hiking knife. So while it likely wouldn't see much batoning or chopping it is something I'd like it to be able to do. One thing I do like about the SOB is that it's got a much thinner blade. Does anyone know the weights of the two knives? I couldn't find that info on the Busse website.

I think the SOB would be a great spot to start, and it will fill the needs you list well.

That said saying you are saving for A Busse is like saying "I am going to start saving for a CRACK ADDICTION" ... ;) :D

Bawwww hahahahahahaha.....Ain't that the truth.....

I would go with the TGLB. SOB may be good, but that bigger blade can do bigger chores. Also, many slightly used TGLB's show up for sale on this forum. You will probably end up with both. And many, many, many, many, many more! Good luck in your choice...Cheers.

This is what I was thinking. I ordered my TGLB off the site and then 2 more busses off the exchange in the mean time then ordered a AMS off the site the same damn day I got the TGLB. I don't think anyone owns A Busse.

To the OP I love my TGLB but my AMS is also awesome so it really depends on your needs. Also check out the exchange you may find an older model you like better

Not to add to your decision making process but for what you described wanting and liking the thinner blade check out the Busse hell razor

I really like the look of the Hellrazor nemesis. If, when I have the funds and am ready to buy my Busse there is one on the exchange I may consider it. I also like the Mud Razor.

Mud Razor is sweet just going to be bit harder to capture....

I have one in my GHB it's definitely a good all around blade. Big enough and tough enough to baton and do some lighter chopping effectively yet thin enough to excel at slicing and other more fine task

Based on your anticipated needs with at least some chopping/batoning, I suggest getting 2 knives, a small one and a large one.

Of those currently available, I recommend the ASHBM and then either a SOB or an AMS.

If you really want a blade thinner than 1/4", the Scrap Yard 1311 is 3/16" thick with a 13.5" blade; this paired with a small knife would cover most needs. The 1311 shows up on the exchange for ~ $300. While the 1311 is not INFI, the SR101 steel is very durable. Keep in mind SR101 (the exposed steel on the uncoated edge) will rust easier than INFI, but with reasonable care this should not be a big issue.

If you are interested in the 1311, be aware that the edge geometry on it is very thin. This is both a gift and a curse, depending on expected uses you would have for it. It will be easier to inflict damage at the edge on it compared to the ASHBM or other current factory offerings. It will also be a more aggressive cutter than the factory ASHBM in my experience due to the thinner geometry overall. Just some food for thought….. :)

While I'm sure I will end up buying more than one, I don't plan on buying 2 at the same time. If I bought a ASHBM and an SOB that would cost me almost $1200 CAD before the 12% tax or import fees, which is slightly more than I can afford to spend all at once. Over time, I'm not at all opposed to it. However, right now I would like to keep the price around $600 CAD total. As for Scrapyard and Swamp Rat Knives at the moment I am not interested in those. Part of the reason I'm looking at Busse if because of the great things I've heard about INFI. While I'm sure that the heat treat on their SR101 is excellent, I just want an INFI blade to be my first.

After looking into it more, I'm starting to really like the SOB. Does anyone have any pictures of an SOB or TGLB in hand or side by side. The pictures on Busse's website aren't good for size comparison, and the picture thread doesn't really show the knives in hand.
