Deciding on a cheap folding knife.

I was on the bay yesterday eyeballing one of the Utilitac 2's. The tanto blade shape really tickles my fancy.

Also, o4tg's testimony is very convincing. Look up his thread on the Utilitac 2 and tell me it's not a user!
Why thank you. She's seen some heavy use. I have a pretty detailed review on ar15.com too with a bit more pictures.

I think I may have converted another Tenascious user a couple nights ago. He thought the knife was assisted the first time he flicked it open. He had never heard of the Utilitac II and missed the Taiwan marking on the blade. He went on to say he probably couldn't afford a knife like that and will stick to the Tenascious. Hia reaction was pretty awesome when I told him it was only $25.

I also really like the thumbstud/cutout combination of the Utilitac 2. What I mean is the stud itself is tall enough and the cutout is large enough to allow you to place the stud about half way down your thumb which gives you complete control over exactly how fast or slow you open the blade. Definitely can't get the level of control opening all knives one-handed.

Haha that's awesome! Dang, I really am gonna have to pick one up in 2014. I'll check that review right now that I have time. My little one is watching Ice Age and my wife is at the grocery store :D

My Utilitac, my first real folder other than small SAK's, same model as o4tg's just slightly different scale design, beast of a knife, love it to death, such a bad@$$ folder and got it for like $24 on the bay. A couple of dollars more expensive nowadays but still totally worth it.

EDIT: And now thanks to this thread I just ordered a Mini Dozier and RAT II...ahahaha..

Lol, that's funny. I am liking what I'm seeing of the Utilitac 2... bit more than the RAT 2. Buuut... Had I wanted something more that size, I wouldn't have dismissed the RAT 1. Think I'm gonna make an easier resolution this year. Decide on a knife, if I like the Utilitac enough to give into getting a bigger knife, or if I'm still going with the RAT 2, before I get payed on Fri.

My Utilitac fits my hand so well. Get the one with the more curvy handle, not the one with the line patterns on it. For me the difference between the two different handle shapes are like night & day, literally.

On Opinel 8 is about $10
A Rat 1 is about $25
An SRM 710 is around $15 (it is sabenza knock off)

Tried commenting from my phone but I guess it didn't go through. Anyways, awesome review. I enjoyed reading it and learning more about the Utilitac. I may have to mosey on over to the "First purchase of 2014" thread and list this knife as my choice

Hmm. Sounds like you just validated getting both!

Yea, yea, keep reeling the new catch into the community... Not like it's not already swimming your way... But yea, "I want both..." has already flashed through my mind a couple times. Still, picking one by the end of the week. May as well choose even if by a random dice roll, and see if I end up being content with it. Can always throw the other in next time a family member starts complaining that I'm hard to buy for.

I hate to admit, but I have this knife in tan. Quality is impressive, especially compared to the Rift knock off they make. However, it is a knock off, uses plastic bushings, and on mine the lock bounces out of place if I open it too fast. It isn't dangerous or anything, I just have to open it up slowly if I don't want blade play.

My biggest complaint is how shallow the lock is. It's almost flush with the grips making it not as user friendly as it could be.

I was looking at the Vapor III, but I was wondering if it is easy to hold on to? It looks like the handle might be a bit slick...?

I've used it for virtually every cutting task I've encountered since buying it, and have never noticed it being slick, even when getting rained on while out fishing. I think some of that has to do with the slim profile and ergonomics, as I'm getting a very solid grip on it in any sensible cutting position.

Thanks for the info and reply! I appreciate it.
