Deciding on the 110 or 112 - Not an Easy Task

I started out when I was like 5 with a $1 walmart knife (if anyone is interested, they still were selling them for $5 until about 2 years ago). A month or two later, when the cheap plastic handle snapped from too much whittling, I spent the next month SOOO disappointed that I didn't have a knife.
My dad got me a buck 112. I absolutely loved it and, though it was dull as dishwasher, it was WORLDS better than that Walmart thing.

I lost it somewhere along the line, but now I have 2 110s.
Maybe it was because the 112 fit my hand better when I was younger, or maybe I liked the shorter blade for more control over splinter extractions, but its 112 for me all the way.
Dont get me wrong, the 110 is good, but the blade is just too long for me.

Since the tip snapped off on the 110 yesterday, anyone have a good idea of how to shorten the blade without ruining the temper, or taking 200 years on a whetstone? Lol

GPyro: what do you mean by 112 carbon? High carbon steel or carbon fiber? Curious because I'm in the market (I mean, when are we NOT in the market?)

D2 or carbon fiber

I couldn't decide either. So mom got me the Buck locking Mega Peanut. Its got both blades in it. And nice bone handles.

I'll make a pic when i have daylight.

5160 from Copper and Clad maybe.

110. If you’re gonna carry a knife this heavy, might as well have the extra size.

I don’t get all the belt carry comments. Since when does a 110 have to be carried in the belt pouch? o_O I even carried mine in my pocket when I was a kid.

My 110 fits just fine in any of my pants pockets, and I don’t find it any more difficult to carry in a pocket than any other knife.

I am a big dude though, and don’t skip leg day.
that's it right there. ya ain't a scrawny toothpick legged, mr salty like I am.:D

Maybe I'm still a youngster, but the weight or size of a knife doesn't bother me. I can carry a leatherman surge in my pocket and it doesn't bother me at all.

AntDog: yes. My dad will not carry the little 503 or whatever tiny single blade knife I got him last year because "it weighs too much". (His keychain weighs more than my surge!)

The only complaint I have with belt carry of a stock 110 is that the cloth sheath is too tight for any belt to fit in without taking the knife out and then threading the sheath on. The leather one is only upright carry, which is uncomfortable IMO. But that doesn't really have to do with the knife, as I dont think the sheaths are even USA made (could be wrong)

S Sanderguy777 you can use a file to reshape the blade. When I have broken the tip. It had been just the very tip like 1/64” maybe. I just kept using it and sharpening it until the tip was normal again. If I broke off like 1/4” or more I send it in for a replacement blade $10 is money well spent.

A few random thoughts on the subject.

I used to pocket carry a 110 a lot. Back pocket in the sheath. It never bothered me and it keeps the sheath nice and tightly formed to the knife.

I like the front bolster on the 112 it gives a more forward grip, making the smaller handle fit my big hand. I wish the 110 was offered with the same bolster.

The higher cost of the 112 holds it back. Hard to justify spending more to get less.

I sometimes feel I’m the only one who appreciates the heft of the 110. It’s a hell of a striking weapon / tool. (In a pinch). It will easily smash a window in an emergency. I use mine for light tapping all the time. Usually on stubborn barrel bolt locks and such.

You really can’t go wrong with either the 110 or 112.

My first buck was a 112. When I'm not carrying a CRK, I carry a112.
The biggest issue is comfort. I like the 112 because it sits better for me in the drivers seat.
Second is blade length.. I have a 4" fixed blade near if I need the extra cutting ability.
Sooo.. IMHO if you can only have one knife with you , I would go with the 110. Otherwise enjoy the handiness of a small folder and the larger fixed blade

If I'm going to carry on my belt the 110 wins every time. I cant notice any difference if I'm belt carrying so might as well go for the king. On the rare occasion I decide to pocket carry a heavy knife it would be the 112. I have no experience with the slim or slim pro, I suspect the 112 would better in the pocket also

Scott, you are missing out on the 112/110 slim line, they slip nicely in the pocket . My only ding on the three I have is the spring is real stiff to push open. One past the detent area (flat spot) on blade it's nice the rest of the way.

newer ones theyve moved the thumbstud out a bit further. makes opening much easier. I didnt think it was hard before and didnt mind the thumbstud more out of the way of the blade, but for those who disliked the angle and harder to push open that's been addressed.

It's not difficult to carefully sand or grind it without getting it too hot. Just make sure you grind the spine down, if you grind from the edge up then the blade may stick out of the blade well, not fun, not to mention you lose the profile of the edge.

I really believe a 112 will do 90% of knife 'work'..My favorite user is a S35VN Slim Pro plus in Black G10. Lately I pick up a 110 LT 'Racer' because of the textured handle. Neuropathy and carpal tunnel makes it easier to grip.

My 501 did 100% for 30yrs. As others mentioned if your going to carry the bulk of a 112 might as well carry the 110. The 112 blade seems and looks stumpy to me. A couple of times I've picked up my 482 to carry for the day and it just feels inadequate to the 110.
One of these days though I'm going to put a 442 drop point blade in a NS 112 frame and slim it down like a 500, that I think I might could be fond of.

Exactly - I recently reshaped a badly broken blade using a bench grinder, working slowly from the spine down and dipping it in water between passes to keep it cool. Ended up with a nice stubby sheepsfoot shape. Gave it my home spa treatment and here are the before and after photos:

St8yd..
Is there any way to get a close up of the tang on your two knives?!! I can make out CJ's sig (real kool) but can't make out the tang on the 112. Thanks!

The last 2 112’s I bought had made in USA sheath, thought the 110 and 112 leather were all brought back. Could be wrong, wouldn’t be the first time.

I have a preference for the 112. I like the size better and it has plenty of blade for most tasks that I encounter. Having said that, the 110 will always be very special to me. I have a very early two dot that I bought new and it's the first quality knife I ever bought. (I was given a Western L66 as a teenager by a family friend, so the 110 is technically my second "good" knife.) I carried the 110 every day for years and even wore out the sheath. (I found a replacement in a store in Jackson Hole, WY, of all places.)
I wanted a 112 for years and years but could never quite justify it to myself. Then, a year or so ago I was about ready to order a drop point 112 with oak handles when I found an ebony two dot in very good condition, including the leather sheath, so I bought it. What I carry most every day now, however, is a 112LT in a polyester sheath. Slim and light, I hardly notice it on my belt.
My "goin' to town" knife is very often a 532 in a 112 polyester sheath, by the way.

I like the 110 a lot more as the 112 handle is a tad short for my preferences. The pinky curve is a little abrupt so while I can use it comfortably I like the straighter handle of the 110. My wife likes the 112 more. I carry a 110 more after getting one of the aluminum-framed ones with a clip, makes it nicer to drop in a pants or vest pocket.
