Decisions decisions... custom Buck 110

They are true rivets but you need not worry about the glue giving out. That stuff is permanent and would need a chemical to break it free...

Thanks man, really. I'll likely go with the smooth, non-riveted look if the glue is that sure. The rivets don't look too bad or protrude on my GEC (link below), so I didn't think that they would be a problem on the 110... but the clean aesthetics of a non-riveted asian water buffalo scale is winning me over.

thanks so much guys... I want it done right, so I will take your advice to heart. So, I have narrowed it to: s30v, nickel bolsters w/finger grooves, rivets, and either jigged water buffalo or sambar stag--(engraving on bolsters). Sound good?

Engraving on the bolsters is ok......not a fan of inset rivets.

I have a CS 110 (finger grooved) with S30v, indigo royalwood, NS bolsters, and rivets...and it looks fantastic, feels incredible, and works like a champ.
If your kid likes the royalwood, why not make him happy?
The rivets play a nice functional and aesthetic role IMO.
Something glued on just doesn't do much for me.

Hey huntbomb. The next time you drive 80 mph on the interstate remember that your windshield is glued on. Kind of scary isint it.

JB4570--thanks for the pick of the engraved bolster; yeah, the rivets look like they are sunken in pretty deep. On my GEC they are pretty flush with the bone (except for one that is a little high and one a little deep)... Huntbomb, I am still considering it--he is pretty young (turning 3 soon, but a pretty alert, articulate, and interactive little guy), and he loves everything blue. So I am considering his toddler fascination with blue vs. a more refined appreciation for excellent materials as he matures. Also, since it will be my knife first, it should be symbolic of my tastes--which should later serve to remind him of me once the knife becomes his... so yeah, I want to make the little guy happy but I also would like to do this right for the long term. As far as the engraving goes, I plan to put my initials on the top bolster and my birth year on the bottom one (script). Still not totally sure about the rivets, but there is a pic in this thread of the jigged water buffalo scale w/o the rivets and it looks very nice.

I like the indigo and nickle. This one also has finger grooves and a partially serrated S30v blade.

Indigo royalwood with a s-30-v blade and silver rivets, that would be a great looking 110 folder.

Ha! I thought this thread would make it easier to narrow things down... ironically, it has made it more difficult. I should have known better... I find myself saying "well, maybe I should just get two..." Judging by your pics/collections that is a common phenomenon. Still, thanks everyone for you help and recommendations! My wife have even gotten in on the act--she voted for the asian water buffalo w/o rivets. I got some time; my regular 110 should be here any day now--I won it here on the forums in a give-a-way. Maybe playing with that for a while will give me a few ideas too. There was a brass bolster w/ ram horn 110 posted here a couple months back... it was really beautiful--the brass and ram's horn exuded warmth; if I were to go with brass instead of nickel, I'd likely go with the ram's horn. Thanks again, and glad to see the Mayan's were wrong... though I really didn't lose sleep over it!

Well the Mayan's were right; they just had the date wrong for themselves.....I don't see any Mayan's still running around, do you?

Now that you brought up the scale materials and frame materials......;) I also think Rams horn goes better with brass, and KOA goes better with brass, and Oak goes better with brass; just did not want to add to your tuff decisions.
Here is a pair of CS knives. one with brass and one with NK, I think brass goes better with Rams horn.

Now I also think the smooth Buff horn and NK go well together. Sorry I don't have a CS...but, I do have a few SOs in that combo (kind of)

Now did you know that all of the Buff horn is not just jet black? Some of it has white streaks in it.....when I first saw this effect I did not like it at all. But, now think it adds to the beauty of the knife IMHO.

Oh man, Jb, better the Mayans go the way of the dodo and we are left to figure out Buck customs! Well, yes, beautiful and much more complex when we add brass bolsters to the mix... and to add to it all, how did you get the blades like that--the rough texture looks amazing, almost like obsidian. No option for that on the Buck page!
