Forgive me being new, but you guys are the experts, so here I go; I would like it to be of good steel, long blade (at least 7'), all black or some type of non reflective coating, any suggestions happily appreciated. Thank You in advance.

From what I have seen, Cold Steel seems to have some good ones at pretty good prices. Have you looked at them?

I don't know how much you're looking to spend, but check out the Chris Reeve Knives One Piece line, specifically the project I, Project II and Jereboam, they all have blades over 7", hollow handles, and are very tough. A lot of folks here seem to have a good opinion of them, I got my Project I a year ago, and have used it several times in the field. A great knife for the money, in my opinion.

Welcome. I am by no means an expert. I think people might be able to answer you better if you are more specific with your question. Criteria you might want to consider are...

- price range
- type of blade style
- materials and / or steel
- what you want the knife to do
- kind of sheath and it's materials
- fixed blade or folder

If you can answer these specific questions, I am sure some people will heartily make some recommendations for you. Good luck and have fun.

I'm basically looking for a fixed blade with maybe a kydex leg sheath, going to use it for camping, hiking and everything else that go's into these activities. I'm looking to spend about $300, materials grade I'm not too sure about, something that can withstand chopping wood if need be and still hold a decent edge. As to blade style, not really interested in tanto style, any other blade style will do. Something along the lines of the Chris Reeve Project I and II seems about right, any others along this line? Thanks again for all your help people, I'm new to the knife scene and after hanging around this forum for a bit, I finally decided to come out of my shell.

You should look at the Busse knives from www.bussecombat.com. Might want to check out the manufacterer and maker forum and go to busse forum. Lots of happy people there with some bad@ss knives.

Mate, I note by your # of post you are "new" at
to knives. So I'll offer a good "starter" knife
that is both well respected and inexpensive from
a well respected manufacture.

Please consider a Buck "Nighthawk" knife. You
will find that like the Becker knives this knife
was designed to "do it all" for the Navy Seals.
Buck didn't win that government contract but we
the consumers got one hell'va stout knife that
WILL do any job you can throw at it with ease.

I carry a 'hawk in my truck as a "work" knife and
use it for every thing from digging to punching
vent holes in 55 gal drums. I've beat it through
logs to split wood in addtions to carving up deer
when my hunting knife broke splitting a rib cage.

The steel is such that in a pinch you can get a
fair edge on a sandstone rock if need be. So give
a look as you might find as I did it's all the
knife I need for most rough field jobs. ;)

Let me know which you guys think would be the better choice in terms of application and materials used, also let me know if there's anything else worth looking at out there. Thanx again.

Tony2001,

You sound sincere. Let me give you a piece of advice. Buy what you will seriously use, not what you think you might need, or what some mall ninja wears in a movie.

Here's an example. I just bought a Buck Alpha Hunter, the one without the gut hook. I've never used a gut hook, so that feature was a big non-issue.

Let me tell you why I chose that model. I already had great folders; I needed a great fixed blade for a 'do anything' camp knife. The handle was very ergonomic (go pick one up, you'll drool) and the blade shape was similar to a Japanese Hai Hocho kitchen knife. And let's face it, a knife in camp is going to be used by you, your buddy, your wife, your buddy's wife...

I'm not crazy about the choice of steel, it's a 420HC. The bevel was crooked, but in twenty minutes the bevel was straightened and the thing is scary sharp at about 20 degrees; that's a good utility edge.

Now, I don't plan on fighting Tommy Lee Jones, Jet Li or the Green Berets. The finish is shiny, so what. If need be, any sharp edge is practical/tactical. You won't be doing any knife fighting while going fishing.

Find implements for YOUR life.

I was looking at the Buck "Nighthawk", it's price is right but I just didnt like the look of that handle, and the blade seemed a bit thin. Went on the Busse site and they do have a lot of interesting knives,I was especially interested in the "Satin Jack CG". Will definately keep this one in mind, when I decide to make my purchase. Thanx again people.

Your advice will definately be taken to heart, but I also would like something that looks good and can be collected. I like this new knife hobby of mine, although I have other "production" knives that can be used, I want to buy something that is a little different this time. A blade that exudes quality and strength, and of course works within my price range.

I agree with averageguy Becker Cu7 or the Becker Combat Bowie, that is if you do not go with a custom. A great knife for the value.

Tony2001,

No prob. A knife that looks good is a great thing to collect. I would say that about 2/3's of my knives fit this category and never see actual use. However, the new knives I buy lately are all 'users.'

The decision was easy for me, I have some great looking knives. I now need to have fun with my friends and not get all concerned about knicks and dings.

Welcome to the hobby and this forum.

im going to second the becker i just got mine in and wow is all i can say the fit and finish is great, shaving sharp out of the box, and looks like it will be able to take on any task i undertake. another suguestion might be a swamp rat knife works blade. they are great looking, tough as nails and have an unbeatable warrenty. good luck on your choice though, every sugestion thus far has been a good one.

I want to see pics of you packing this 7 foot blade with a sheath.............Sorry, couldn't resist.:D :D

I meant the blade itself should be at least 7 inches, not 7 feet, that would definately be a site. Yes I'm leaning towards the Becker's, Project II's and Strider's, although the prices on the Becker cant be beat, the other two just look so darn nice. Still thinking, but thanks for all the input people.
