Decisions, decisions, looking for a great tactical/survival knife.

Those Fehrman knives are sweeet! They sort of look like Busse's, is one better than the other, I havent seen too much on Fehrman here.

Any one, better over the other?

I own both and prefer Fehrman knives,
There edges are ground so that they make great choppers but also make great slicers.
Trust me when I say that they are not like Busse knives,They make look a little similar, but in person when you hold them, thats when you see they are different knives.

Eric Fehrman is a heck of a nice guy,Feel free to either email him or give him a call,Im sure he would be happy to answer any questions you have.

You've made my decision just a little harder, another great looking yet functional knife I will keep in mind.

The main problem I have with Busse's is there handle,Its to thin for my hands and the the hump in the handle ends up leaving me with a sore hand, and with the thin grip,The blade tends to shift in the hand.

No problem Tony,

Like I said give Eric Fehrman a call, tell him I sent ya,and he could answer a hole alot of questions for you.

Your advice will definately be taken to heart, but I also would like something that looks good and can be collected. I like this new knife hobby of mine, although I have other "production" knives that can be used, I want to buy something that is a little different this time. A blade that exudes quality and strength, and of course works within my price range.

Check out the Tommi's from Kellam: http://www.kellamknives.com/cart/shop.cgi/SID=PUT_SID_HERE/page=index1.html

They don't come any better, hand forged blades, gorgeous looks, unique, proven design over 100's of years in true survival condition and they DEFINE sharp!

Tony, You buy what you want but a few facts about
the Nighthawk.
It's a full 1/4" THICK at the spine to butt inside
the handle.

The handle material is Kevlar(they use it to make
bullet proof vest) and a semi-tacky (for grip with wet or cold hands) acralan(sp?) that sits in your hand like it's part of your body.

Mate, you do what's best for you but you'll spend
lots of money and get no better field knife that
the Nighthawk. It ain't no sissy knife mate.:D

I'm basically looking for a fixed blade with maybe a kydex leg sheath, going to use it for camping, hiking and everything else that go's into these activities. I'm looking to spend about $300, materials grade I'm not too sure about, something that can withstand chopping wood if need be and still hold a decent edge. As to blade style, not really interested in tanto style, any other blade style will do. Something along the lines of the Chris Reeve Project I and II seems about right, any others along this line? Thanks again for all your help people, I'm new to the knife scene and after hanging around this forum for a bit, I finally decided to come out of my shell.

me: Can't help you, Tony. $300 is a pretty big price range. I can get a lot of knives for that much money or a few exclusive ones or one really good custom. Judging from what has been posted, you are getting plenty of help. A criteria you may want to go by is reading posts by Cliff Stamp. The testing he has done is right up your alley. From what I have seen of Mr. Stamp's reviews, I found he particularly liked Becker, Busse, Chris Reeve, Thomas Johanning, adn a host of others. He had some kind of top ten list. You may find something that fits the bill. Good luck.
