I've owned a BM CQC7 for... 5 years(?) and I have loved it. I never go anywhere without it. I consider it to be an indespensible piece of my line one gear for everyday life, and I am now pretty serious about purchasing an Emerson custom/handmade. If a production knife can be THIS good, I'd trust my ass to one that Mr. Emerson personally made. I'm sorry tha he has chosen to stop taking orders on custom models, but I'd much rather see that happen than see quality drop. I am willing to bet that most people who drop the kind of cash they do for this are either making a serious financial investment through a collection, or "operate." Mr. Emerson, Derek, thank you for producing such a quality product. In the 5 years that I've owned my BMCQC7, I've had only one liner-lock failure and that occured when I smacked the spine of the blade against the side of a door. (I was bored and fidgeting

I fiddled with it a couple of times, smacked it against the door the same way a couple more times, and never had another failure like that again. By the way, my fingers were very much so, out of the way even when the failure caught me by surprise.) At any rate, I am starting to hunt for a CQC6 or the handmade CQC7. My big question is which one should I go for? Also I am thinking that I am going to opt to hunt for a non serrated blade. Any thoughts on the issue? I would greatly appreciate any input or advice you guys might be able to give me. Thanks. (back to lurking... *G*)

David,

One thing that you will find hanging about these parts is that once you have one custom Emerson, you start looking for them all. I am sure that the rest of the Usual Suspects will back me up on this.

My advice would be to buy which ever of the two you come across first at an acceptable price and then start saving for the rest!!!

Ed

If I could afford to go around collecting them, you bet I would. But what I'm looking for is going to be a USER. It will be on me in all kinds of conditions and not sit in a display case. I know tha the CQC6 has a rep with the Teams, or Marcinko, at least. What I want to know is if the CQC6 is better than the CQC7. What makes one different/better/more desirable than the other? Is one bigger? is the steel better in one model? Do you think my choice for a non-serrated edge is a wise one? Thanks for your input.

I'd say your decision to go without serrations is a good one, especially since nearly all of Ernie's customs are made non-serrated. The chances of finding a combo edged one are pretty slim in either model.

Most 6s and 7s share virtually the same blade now-a-days, in both length and geometry. And from a using point of view, they're identical. The handle shape is very different, and that's a personal preferences call. I think - just my opinion - that the 7 offers a better control with that slight downturn in the back. The 7 has a broader bolster, too, so it might be a tad stronger. However, I like the feel of the 6 much better, including the skull crusher pointy tail. The you'll be happy with either, as long as you can swallow carrying a $1,200 knife for everyday use. Blasphamous as it may sound, you may want to consider an SOCFK production Emerson at $150 first; if you liked a Benchmade that much, the EKI knife will floor you. Feel free to email for greater detail.

Thanks for your input... Ive already carried a production CQC7 for 5 years now. The price tag for the custom/handmade doesn't deter me from the idea of carrying it and using it under field conditions. I'm spending this kind of money because I'm looking for a tool of that kind of caliber and reputation to back it. I've been very happy with my production blade, but I'd like to move up now. I'm just looking for input on the aforementioned criteria to help me choose which model I want to get.

David,

Personally the CQC6 is my favorite. I like the pointed butt as opposed to the hooked one on the CQC7.

As has already been mentioned, the blade profiles are pretty much identical on current models.

Hope this helps

John

David,

If you are just going for the one, a CQC6 with the plain blade would be my choice. That is what started me down the slippery slope and I carry mine in rotation with some of my other knives.

Thanks guys... Any ideas as to what would be the best/most reliable way of picking one up? I hesitate to use ebay as I read a former post suggesting that you might not be getting exactly what you think you are.

The other "advantage" of the CQC-6 is that there is no production equivalent! So A CQC-6 by definition is a custom. That is what I carry until my custom ESM-1 comes thru.

AARRGGGHH!!! I don't have the funds just yet! Time out! Nobody buy it! *L*

Ah well... another opportunity will present itself at some time.

Rats.
